Summary

The Sr. Residence Hall Coordinator is part of a dynamic team of Residential Life professional staff who live and serve students within University-owned and operated residential facilities at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The Sr. RHC contributes to the university mission by creating and implementing inclusive, supportive communities that foster and enhance students’ development, connections to Mizzou, learning, and academic success. The Sr. RHC supervises 5-17 Resident Advisors and coordinates operations of one or more University-owned and operated residence halls that house approximately 250-600 students. The position oversees educational, leadership and social based program development and implementation, advises on student government, provides counseling and student referrals to campus resources, is responsible for occupancy management including contracting and brand recognition, and acts as a liaison with many campus resources and services including, but not limited to, campus facilities and campus dining. The Sr. RHC is responsible for the health, safety and security of our residents as well as supporting a sense of student belonging and retention.

Sense of Belonging and Community Development

  • Develop relationships with residents to help them be successful at Mizzou.
  • Model and challenge students to uphold the University of Missouri’s core values of Respect, Responsibility, Discovery, and Excellence.
  • Create and promote a caring atmosphere conducive to academic pursuits and the personal development of students.
  • Advise, counsel, and hold accountable individual students, making referrals when necessary.
  • Develop and implement meaningful on-going learning and experiential programs focused on learning outcomes for students residing in Residential Life housing. Outcomes may be determined by Residential Life leadership, or campus partners such as academic units or even the President.
  • Continually review programs for success and accomplishment of outcomes, implementing improvements or updates, as needed.
  • Advise and collaborate with student leaders and organizations, including Hall Government, Residence Halls Association (RHA), and National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH).
  • Interact, counsel, advise students and student government on rules, policies, resources to ensure activities meet the university standards and expectations.

Residence Hall Staff Supervision and Development

  • Assist with the selection, training, and supervision of 5-17 Resident Advisors (RAs).
  • Plan and implement a weekly RA staff meeting with the residence hall staff.
  • Conduct regular, weekly one-on-one meetings with individual RAs.
  • Provide regular formal and informal feedback to RAs regarding job performance and professional and personal development.
  • Participate in and lead annual and ongoing staff trainings for RAs.
  • Develop a sense of community among the RA staff through staff activities, leadership skill-building, and professional and personal development opportunities.
  • Attend and participate in weekly neighborhood and monthly unit staff meetings with other Sr. RHCs and Assistant Directors.

Residence Hall Administration and Operations

  • Maintain daily office hours and offer a high degree of availability and visibility for all residents and staff members.
  • Manage administrative responsibilities including review and response to students who are not enrolled, health & safety checks, occupancy checks, etc. Evaluate and identify student academic or health related risks that may be revealed with these checks and escalate or refer as needed to leadership and campus partners.
  • Lead, coordinate and support departmental committees, occupancy management including contracting and brand recognition.
  • Maintain hall rosters and resident records utilizing StarRez software.
  • Ensure that maintenance problems are reported and corrected as soon as possible.
  • Collaborate with the Campus Facilities and the Building Services Supervisor (BSS) and custodial staff to assist with coordination of maintenance and custodial requests.

Departmental Responsibilities

  • Provide first-line crisis response and management and participate in a year-round duty rotation.
  • Support at-risk students and assist with disciplinary referrals and follow up.
  • Assist with evaluation, identification, and mitigation of immediate risk in the residential community and maintain knowledge of best practices and resources for further action.
  • Assist with student staff recruitment, selection, and training.
  • Assist with department wide and divisional programming, all hall openings and closings.
  • Support the Residential Life Administrative office with large projects and initiatives, this includes contracting initiatives and housing assignments.
  • Lead and serve on Sr. RHC Committees (Professional Staff Recruitment, Selection & Training, Student Staff Experience, Programming and Residential Curriculum, Sense of Belonging, Operations, and/or other committees as assigned)
  • Assist with summer housing assignments, as needed.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Act as situationally critical staff and expect to be instructed to work in situations that impact the residence halls.
  • Liaise with campus partners such as the Disability Center, Student Counseling Center, Office of Inclusion and Equity, and the Office of Accountability to enhance residential learning and student engagement.
  • Receive training on a wide variety of MU programs and offerings and appropriate delivery methods.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and all training sessions scheduled by their supervisor and the department.
  • As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities is expected in order to serve and maintain our Residential Life and Student Affairs mission.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation with other Sr. RHCs. Answer the on-call phone after 5 p.m. on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends.

Salary

ANTICIPATED START DATE: JULY 2023

Salary Range: $48,900 - $50,800 paid on a monthly schedule. In addition, this position includes housing in a University-operated facility valued at approximately $7,215 per year.

Shift

The Sr. Residence Hall Coordinator position is a 12-month live-in position. Shifts may include nights and weekends based on operational needs and on-call responsibilities. This includes working during academic breaks.


Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Student Affairs or a related field with 3 years of experience in Housing or Residential Life including experience with conflict mediation, crisis response, and management is preferred. As well as:

  • Understanding issues of diversity and inclusivity, effectiveness in promoting respect and appreciation for diversity and pluralism among students and staff is required.
  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, communication, conflict mediation, crisis response and management.
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, display a strong commitment to student learning, and work collaboratively with stakeholders inside and outside of the university.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle.
