Job Description
PaleoWest is seeking a motivated and dynamic Senior Architectural Historian to support operations in Utah. The Senior Architectural Historian will provide technical expertise and leadership to guide a variety of projects through the environmental and historic preservation compliance processes for our clients in the private and public sectors. The successful candidate will serve as key staff at the regional level in Utah. Essential job duties are as follows:
  • Conduct research and perform built environment fieldwork, as needed
  • Provide management support to field teams and subcontractors
  • Manage and mentor technical and compliance team members
  • Oversee the development of various reports, including Historic Structure Reports, Environmental Impact Reports, Condition Assessments, National Register Nominations, Preservation Plans, HABS/HAER reports, and Federal Tax Credit Certification documentation
  • Prepare proposals, develop budgets, write statements of qualifications, and provide client presentations
  • Determine eligibility under the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria and state registers
  • Coordinate with other staff and senior management to ensure the quality of data, fieldwork, and documentation
Hire Type: Full-time, salaried
Schedule: Monday–Friday, normal business hours
Location: Salt Lake City, UT, option for remote work
Required Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in historic preservation, public history, or a closely related field
  • 10+ years of professional experience, including developing budgets, preparing proposals, and writing/producing technical reports
  • Knowledge and experience working with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and other state and local laws and regulations
  • GIS knowledge
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work out-of-town, as necessary
Preferred Skills
  • Experience working with federal, state, municipal, and private clients in a professional setting
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Project management experience, including time and budget management
  • Possess good leadership and judgement
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat
