Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia – principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Our scenic campus is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. We are one of 23 community colleges in Virginia that comprise the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).

Job Description: The full-time Security Officer will maintain a safe and secure learning and working environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors at PVCC.

Responsibilities: Monitor and make rounds to ensure safety and security of PVCC community members and facilities. Typical duties: lock and unlock College buildings, doors, and classrooms; provide visitors and College community members with information and directions to campus buildings, classrooms, and off-campus areas; notify campus police of suspicious persons, activities or safety hazards found during tour of duty; maintain accurate records and logs of activity; operate security & state vehicles; respond to complaints and make preliminary investigations. Answer alarms and disturbances, contact police, fire, & rescue in case of an emergency and follow established College emergency procedures. Patrol among visitors and College community members to preserve order and protect property. Answer phones in a professional manner. Patrol parking lots and issue warnings to persons with rule infractions or law violations, write tickets for parking violations. Escort, via motor vehicle or golf cart, individuals to specified location or to provide personal protection. Give limited aid when individuals are experiencing motor vehicle problems. Monitor and check fire & safety devices. Perform other duties as assigned. Officers must be accountable for their actions and dependable in their attendance and should demonstrate these characteristics through their dutiful attendance of all scheduled shifts and appointments. Officers also must be available for contact during emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess good judgement, discretion, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must be computer literate (MS Word or equivalent, Outlook, etc.) High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Three years of post-high school experience. Have a valid driver’s license and good driving history.
  • Successfully pass a background check, including criminal history and driving history.
  • Be able to obtain and maintain CPR/AED and First Aid certification. Have basic knowledge of campus environment and/or security industry, relevant laws, and safety and fire prevention.


Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in Criminal Justice/Security or related field OR two years law enforcement experience preferred. Demonstrated strong student orientation and customer focus. A strong service orientation and a demonstrated ability to work in a diverse, multicultural community, and excellent written and verbal skills.
