Seasonal Field Position - Arispe Job at Oregon State University

This recruitment will be used to fill three part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week during academic terms and up to 40 hours during academic and summer break) seasonal student positions for the OSU Extension Service Office in Malheur County at Oregon State University (OSU).

The seasonal position will require a student to perform office and fieldwork based out of the OSU Extension Service Office in Malheur County. Responsibilities include working on multi-media and rangeland-based beef projects related to improving the sagebrush steppe of southeastern Oregon.

This position is located in Ontario, Oregon.
Position Duties
  • Collecting vegetative data for rangeland-based beef cattle experiments
  • Video production and photography in the sagebrush steppe of Malheur and Harney Counties
  • Recording rangeland data in Excel and creating tables and figures
  • Work with large herbivore grazing behavior datasets
  • Support Extension Service programming and administrative tasks at extension programs

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Must be willing to work in rough, rugged, and remote rangeland conditions with a rangeland crew that consists of university students—as of fall 2023—graduate students, university faculty, and volunteers.
  • Due to the nature of the field work, the individual must be able to pickup 30 pounds overhead.
  • Additionally, it is imperative to have incredible skills to communicate with and support a broader team.
  • This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Experience as a team member working with diverse team members
  • Experience in a club or organization towards natural resource conservation
  • Ability to identify rangeland plants
  • Experience with technology to produce multimedia videos
  • Ability to speak and write in a at least one other language
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The student worker may be required to work up to an approximate 20 hours per week. Student may work up to 40 hours per week during academic and summer breaks.
