Job Title: Scientist – Polymer Characterization

Job Dimensions
  • Provide analytical information in the area of polymer characterization, specifically thermal analysis, to all Arkema Inc. R&D units, process technology, manufacturing plants, and HES groups.
  • Completes workload within project timelines. Takes broad view of data analysis and can get involved in analyzing data outside of submitted samples. Leverages other techniques, if needed, to complete projects.
  • Working under advice of senior polymer characterization staff, develops methods as required to complete analysis. Generates new insights from project work.
  • Develops lab strategic plan. Proposes and completes strategic projects related to ASR.
  • Writes and issues technical reports
  • Serves on R&D project teams and collaborate with colleagues to solve problems spanning a diverse range of chemistries.
  • Helps maintain system reliability and continuity of service, manage hardware/software changes and upgrades.
  • Develops extensive professional network with Arkema Inc. scientists; actively participates in appropriate professional organizations.
  • Develops knowledge of Arkema products and processes for the business units that are supported and a general understanding of business interests and markets.
  • Looks for and pursues opportunities to publish/present externally
Key Activities and responsibilities
  • Operate, and assist in overseeing maintenance of thermal analysis laboratory equipment (DSC/PDSC, DTA, TGA, TMA, pycnometry).
  • Provide updates on the status of key projects and analytical requests with clear emphasis on value.
  • Conduct analyses of 10-15 requests (25-100 samples) per month, depending on technique and complexity, using a range of thermal analysis methods that are both routine and non-routine in nature, organizes and interprets data and writes reports detailing the work.
  • Use internal networks to overcome issues, find solutions, and achieve objectives.
  • Maintain awareness of polymer characterization techniques, especially those related to thermal analysis, as applied to Arkema interests and products.
  • Actively participate in Arkema’s safety programs and lead relevant safety projects as required.

Required Education/Qualifications /Work experience

  • PhD in Material Science, Polymer Physics or Polymer Sciences; experience with operation of thermal analysis equipment and interpretation of data.
  • Ability to independently develop projects leading to enhanced understanding of property-structure relationships.
  • Experience with other analytical techniques highly desirable.
