Job Summary:

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine is seeking a Scientist II to work on studies related to cardiac arrhythmia and heart failure. The incumbent will design and conduct studies to understand the cellular, molecular, and whole-heart mechanisms by which mutations in cardiac proteins affect calcium handling, leading to arrhythmia and heart failure. The incumbent will design and conduct experiments using genetically engineered animals (mainly mice and rabbits) and other relevant model systems. This position requires close coordination with the supervisor to prepare reports for sponsors, develop new grant applications and prepare manuscripts for publication. Previous experience in cardiac electrophysiology is necessary to be considered for this position.

Responsibilities:
Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and prepares and/or presents results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.
  • 25% Identifies research problems and develops complex research methodologies and procedures
  • 35% Collects and analyzes complex research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision
  • 15% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • 5% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • 10% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • 5% May supervise the day-to-day activities of a research unit as needed
  • 5% Serves as a unit subject matter expert and liaison to internal and external stakeholders providing advanced level information and representing the interests of a specialized research area

Preferred focus in Biochemistry or related field



Qualifications:
Required:
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-doctoral research experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics or electrophysiology.
  • Experience with the following techniques: Cellular electrophysiology (patch clamp), handling of laboratory animals and isolation of primary cardiomyocytes.

Preferred:
  • Culture of primary cells from human and animal cardiac tissues
  • General cellular and molecular biology techniques including but not limited to: protein isolation, gel electrophoresis, western blotting, DNA/RNA isolation, immunohistochemistry, microscopy and flow cytometry, mass spectrometry.
  • Confocal microscopy
  • Management and culture of cell lines
  • Mutagenesis

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $60,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

The starting salary for the position is $60,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
