The Associate Dean for External Relations reports to the Dean as a member of the law school’s senior leadership team and is the senior administrative officer for the School of Law’s alumni outreach, Center for Career and Professional Development, Public Affairs, Marketing, external event management, and Institutional Advancement programs. The Associate Dean is responsible for strategic oversight and management of law school resources engaged in alumni relations, business and community relations, career planning, development, donor relations, and external events. The Associate Dean works with a wide range of departments, faculty, and students within the law school and university to develop and implement communication and marketing strategies to promote law school accomplishments, events, and programs. In conjunction with the Dean and Liberty University’s Advancement Office the Associate Dean plans, launches, and manages targeted fundraising campaigns to 1) engage alumni participation and support, 2) enhance the strategies and operations of career planning for law students, and 3) effectively manage the costs and scheduling of law school publicity and events. The Associate Dean works collaboratively with Liberty University’s Alumni Association Department, University Development, and Marketing offices to provide a coordinated approach to advancement programs, alumni relations, communication, marketing, and event management.

Alumni Relations

  • In conjunction with the Dean, strategically plans and implements multi-faceted programs for alumni, students, and friends that increase good will and positive relationships with the law school;
  • Oversees alumni event planning and programs including alumni travel, networking, reunions, professional development, alumni chapters, CLE, and other special events;
  • Promotes events that encourage alumni involvement including developing and producing marketing and promotional materials;
  • Identifies, trains, and deploys alumni volunteers, board leaders, and advisory councils;
  • Assists the Dean in preparing regular correspondence to alumni;
  • Manages program-specific budgets and produces annual reports;
  • Performs related duties as required or deemed appropriate to accomplish the assigned duties and responsibilities of this position.

Career Services

  • Oversees the Center for Career and Professional Development, and in conjunction with the Dean and Director of Career Services, provides strategic guidance on trends and opportunities in employment, and integrates career networking with alumni and external relations;
  • Oversees pro bono , public service, and community service opportunities;
  • Markets Liberty Law School, students, and alumni to prospective employers through a variety of venues and methods including off-site career fairs, employer development visits, and attendance at selected conferences and bar association meetings;
  • Meets with a wide variety of individuals, law firms, public interest agencies, and other organizations that express interest in students and alumni;
  • Maintains active membership in bar associations and organizations as appropriate;
  • Strategically designs and oversees the institutional advancement program for the school;
  • Fosters engagement between alumni, the legal, judicial and government professional communities, employers, faculty and students;
  • Coordinates teams and activities for maximum efficiency and consistent message.

Public Affairs

  • In conjunction with the Dean, Director of Public Affairs, University Marketing, and outside vendors provides strategic direction and oversight to the law school to help advance the school’s image and brand;
  • Through a collaborative approach, determines advertising, communications, and public relations strategy for both the law school and to assist in building the overall Liberty University brand;
  • In conjunction with the Dean, Director of Public Affairs, University Marketing, and appropriate vendors, develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive integrated communications and marketing program; the strategic program will encompass marketing, media relations, and publications, and will be designed to ensure communication of institutional priorities in research, teaching, and public service to key constituencies;
  • Manages the public affairs office, which is responsible for media relations and institutional publications for the campus;
  • Identifies target groups for campus outreach and dissemination of marketing materials and develops and implements plans for conducting market research of target groups;
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive integrated communications plan for the campus, in consultation with the Dean, law school administration, and campus departments;
  • In conjunction with the Dean, Director of Public Affairs, University Marketing, and appropriate vendors, develops and implements plans for the use of electronic and web-based communication for implementation of public relations strategies;
  • In conjunction with the Dean, Director of Public Affairs, University Marketing, and appropriate vendors, develops and implements plans for high visibility speaking engagements and other public relations activities to strategically link the institution and its key leaders with opinion leaders and targeted constituent groups.

Development and External Relations

  • Routinely represents the School of Law at on-campus and off-campus special events and actively promotes program activities across campus among various constituencies;
  • Serves as an institutional advancement liaison to community businesses, law firms, and government leaders;
  • Leads and directs the strategic process of identifying and cultivating donors, and, in conjunction with the Dean solicits and closes major gifts for the purpose of advancing the mission and gaining financial support for the school;
  • Assists the Dean in identifying, cultivating, and recruiting individuals to serve on the law school’s various external advisory boards;
  • Serves on law school and University committees as assigned.

Leadership/Management

  • Creates and maintains a high-performance environment characterized by positive leadership, a philosophy of campus collaboration, a strong team orientation, and active participation in School of Law/Department activities;
  • Manages, motivates, and evaluates staff to improve quantity and quality of work performed, while maintaining budget and meeting deadlines;
  • Participates in ongoing planning processes to implement the annual school wide goals and strategic plan of the school;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • JD Degree from an ABA accredited law school;
  • Demonstrated performance record of at least seven to ten years in successful and progressively responsible leadership. This can be demonstrated in law career services, student services, higher education, or law firm or legal industry development;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in higher education, talent acquisition and employment placement, and/or non-profit or fundraising activities and administration.
  • Managerial and supervisory experience;
  • Experience working with students and/or employees in a supervisory position in a variety of settings;
  • Experience working with budget matters, human resources, and IT, preferably in higher education;
  • Excellent portfolio of events and programs that establish an ability to think creatively about professional students and their career development as well as an ability to collaborate across a variety of systems and organizational situations;
  • Established track record as collaborator in the workplace, within the immediate department and within the larger institution, as well as a record demonstrating effective leadership as a strong and motivational manager;
  • Experience with data collection, analysis, and report writing;
  • Experience working across disciplines with faculty, colleagues, managers;
  • Experience championing institutional commitment and developing an integrated approach to message and design;
  • Experience in counseling, program management, higher education, or a related field preferred;
  • Knowledge of legal education and of an excellent higher education career services environment highly desirable.
