We are seeking a RETAIL MERCHANT – WOMEN’S APPAREL to join the Orvis Team! The candidate should live near the Orvis corporate office in Sunderland, VT or near a major Orvis Women’s retail market (Northeast: New York City; South: Atlanta, Raleigh, Charlotte, Nashville, Northern Virginia/Washington, D.C.; Midwest: Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis).

The Retail Merchant, Women’s will strive to empower our customer to connect with the adventure and wonder in the natural world – be it with her family, her friends, her dog, or just herself. They will collaborate with the Director of Merchandising in curating seasonal assortments for the Retail channel, in alignment with omni-channel strategies and goals. Success will be measured in the category’s ability to meet the sales and profit goals, as well as the individual’s ability to contribute and execute to the category vision, facilitate cross-functional partnerships, and meet deadlines.

Position Interfaces:
This position reports to the Director of Merchandising, Women’s. The Retail Merchant will interface daily with the Women’s Allocations Analyst, as well as Retail District Managers, Store Managers, and Store Women’s Leads. In addition, they will partner with Planning, Marketing, and Product Development & Design job functions that support the Women’s category.

Responsibilities:
  • Completes business analysis for specific projects, as well as recurring analysis for the Retail sales channel to identify risks/opportunities based on current trend and competitive landscape; share opportunities with Planning, Allocations & Merchandising partners, as well as with Store teams to influence sales results
  • Builds channel assortment with alignment to seasonal category financial and strategic plans
  • Manage & communicate assortment strategy to Planning team through Smartsheet assortment management tool; special focus on the Retail channel assortment, in alignment with category financial and strategic plans
  • Partner with Women’s Allocations Analyst to optimize inventory efficiency and guide product flow through key floor set time periods
  • Test & measure new channel strategies to optimize store types, geographic differences, presentation standards, new product types, and more
  • Build quarterly floor set directives in alignment with omni assortment guide, communicating key table sets, visual merchandising direction, and outfitting-inspired product adjacencies
  • Work on the store floor a minimum of 4x a year to directly engage with our customers and store staff
  • Travel to critical Women’s Retail markets a minimum of 2x a year to better understand the current and future customer, as well as the regional competitive landscape
  • Present seasonal strategy & product trainings at seasonal Store Managers Conference
  • Survey the competitive landscape, with ability to identify market trends in both product, marketing, and visual merchandising efforts

  • Prior merchandising experience (5 years) in a multi-channel and/or vertically integrated retail organization
  • Experience in a retail environment
  • A four-year College degree, preferably in related business field such as Merchandising
  • Experience managing projects, including complex and cross-functional projects
  • Results oriented; strong business and financial acumen; self-managed
  • Experience leading others in a direct report or cross-functional leader capacity
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and Excel
  • Strong familiarity with the Orvis product line, culture and lifestyle
