The Department of Microbiology is seeking a computational biologist (Researcher 6) to join the Langlois laboratory and the Antiviral Drug Discovery Center (AViDD). The Langlois lab aims to understand how viruses interact with their hosts. To achieve this we use a number of molecular biology, sequencing and computational approaches to analyze large, complex, multidimensional data. AViDD aims to find therapeutic interventions to help prevent and treat future viral pandemics. The Cellular and Organismic Systems Core supports the entire Midwest AViDD Center by coordinating and implementing cell and animal antiviral testing experiments for the entire center. Based at the University of Minnesota, Boston University and the University of Iowa, the Cellular and Organismic Systems Core provides the specialized resources and administrative framework for performing cellular and animal BSL2, BSL3, BSL4 studies. This Core will focus on SARS-CoV-2, Zika virus, Ebola virus and Lassa virus. This core will evaluate validated hits through high throughput screening, evaluate refined compounds for antiviral activity and dose response, the potential for escape, and efficacy in primary human cells. Finally, compounds that demonstrate efficacy in vitro will be evaluated for prophylactic and therapeutic efficacy in relevant animal disease models.

Duties include:

  • 25% Analyze next-generation sequencing data to discover novel sequences of interest
  • 25% Assemble and annotate novel viral genomes and RNA features from metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data, and develop new computational methods or leverage existing methodologies
  • 25% Create and maintain pipelines for processing high-throughput next-generation sequencing data for comparative genomics and gene discovery studies and statistical analysis of multidimensional data
  • 25% Developing and executing new research projects, including writing grants, mentoring trainees, and preparing research for presentation and publication
