The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences has an opening for a Research Scientist 3. The Research Scientist will manage research projects within Fire, Landscapes, Adaptive Management and Ecology (FLAME) lab of the Precision Forestry Cooperative (PFC) under the guidance of supervisory scientists and research faculty. The PFC was established to develop advanced technology solutions to improve the quality and reliability of information needed for planning, implementation, monitoring, and conservation of ecological resources, to ensure sustainable landscape outcomes on forests, wetlands, meadows, and wildlife habitats. Within the PFC, the FLAME lab focuses on fire ecology and management research with a strong emphasis on climate change and fire-prone forests.

The successful candidate for this position will be a fire ecologist with a strong quantitative background and publication history. The PFC offers a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative work environment, and we are seeking a skill individual with a keen willingness to work collaboratively and contribute to a constructive and positive work environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

RESEARCH PROJECT MANAGEMENT (80%)

  • Active involvement in project planning and management, including identification of problems and finding innovative and technical solutions.

  • Provides project leadership including leading tasks within large, interdisciplinary projects.

  • Contributes to report writing and peer-reviewed scientific articles, including primary and coauthor roles.

  • Conducts quantitative and statistical analysis and seeks training and collaborations to keep abreast of advancing technological approaches.

  • Presents research findings at scientific conferences and other invited presentations.

  • Creates, monitors and implements research plans and takes lead responsibility for scoping tasks and project timelines and deliverables.

  • Engages with external research collaborators and contributes to positive relationships through timely and professional contributions.


  • SUPERVISORY AND MENTORSHIP (20%)

  • Leads research tasks, including setting project tasks, analysis approaches, timelines and deliverables to project collaborators, including students, laboratory technicians and other research scientists.

  • Actively mentors junior staff, including early career scientists, graduate students, and undergraduates in technical and team-building skills.

  • Supervises laboratory and field technicians as needed.


  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree in Forestry, Forest Ecology, Forest Science, or related field

  • Three years or more of experience in:

  • o Wildland fire science
    o Remote sensing and GIS
    o Statistical analysis including proficiency in statistical design and R
    o Prescribed fire operations and research
    o Project leadership, including supervising laboratory and field crews
    o Manuscript and report writing

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    DESIRED:

  • Experience working on large, interdisciplinary wildland fire science studies.

  • Strong ecological background in western North American ecosystems and publication history.

  • Desire to plan and conduct innovative research on fire ecology with particular emphasis on prescribed and cultural burning studies.

  • Motivation to be an excellent team member, including strong communication skills, kindness, and commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity and Justice training and growth on the job.


  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Employee’s work environment will be flexible with an office available within the Precision Forestry Cooperative but with options for working from home.
