POSITION SUMMARY:

The Murphy lab at the Center for Regenerative Medicine of Boston University/Boston Medical Center is currently seeking a full-time Research Data Associate to join our team. The position is a great opportunity for a motivated individual interested in gaining experience and technical expertise in an exciting research field.

The candidate will work closely with the Murphy lab members to support the different research projects. Primary responsibilities will include iPSCs culture for maintenance and expansion, basic characterization using PCR, cDNA preparation, Real-time PCR and immunostaining. He/she will also assist with the creation of various genetically modified iPSC lines using genome-editing technologies (CRISPR/Cas9) for the study of developmental biology and disease modeling. In addition, he/she will be in charge of ordering and purchasing and maintaining the lab stocks.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
  • Performs routine and complex experiments, techniques and molecular biological procedures (such as Western blotting, ELISA, tissue cultures, protein analysis, cloning, sequencing, isolating, etc.) according to established protocols.
  • Assists with husbandry, collects samples; maintains data records. Performs animal dissections and muscle physiology experiments.
  • Utilizes advanced techniques, analyzes data, and designs experiments in collaboration with Principal Investigator or with other project staff. Researches or develops alternate testing methods and techniques as required to further the research study.
  • Provides technical supervision and guidance to students and visiting researchers. Trains new laboratory employees in safety, routine experiments, and daily laboratory operations. Ensures that all laboratory users are properly trained in standard operating procedures and equipment specific requirements. Coordinates and shares effective experimental protocols with other lab users.
  • Updates laboratory notebook. Maintains documentation of data interpretation and summarization. Communicates results of assays performed, and specific methods used. Maintains clear, concise, accurate and legible records.
  • Reports results and issues encountered to the Principal Investigator in a timely manner.
  • Performs audits and quality checks of data and samples. Examines reliability of results and determines whether modifications or repeat procedures are necessary.
  • Presents weekly written report and answers questions regarding the performance of the experiments and the integrity of the data.
  • Proposes new or changes to protocols; monitors compliance with safety and OSHA compliance.
  • Responsible for laboratory's chemical inventory and biohazard safety compliance. Ensure proper handling, storing and freezing of specimens and supplies, disposes of waste according to policy and ensures proper use of equipment and facilities.
  • Maintains appropriate laboratory inventory and requisitions related supplies as needed.
  • Performs research literature searches as needed.
  • Assists with writing manuscripts.
  • Assists with IRB filings and other grant-related documentation.
  • Attends all scheduled lab meetings or if unable and excused, accepts responsibility for reading staff meeting minutes.
  • Utilizes hospital's cultural beliefs as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital's mission and goals.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures. Reports all incidents, safety hazards or accidents to appropriate personnel.
  • Performs other duties, as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field is required.

EXPERIENCE:
  • At least one year of cell culture experience with excellent sterile technique is essential. Background in molecular biology and familiarity with routine laboratory tasks are highly desirable.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • The successful candidate will be a motivated person with careful attention to detail, excellent organization and documentation skills.
