The Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes is located within the Regenstein Center for African Apes, a world-class facility that features dynamic habitats for chimpanzees and gorillas. The center’s mission is to conduct multidisciplinary research that advances the knowledge of ape behavior and biology, improve the care and management of apes in human care, and conserve and protect wild chimpanzee and gorilla populations. The successful appointee will perform a variety of administrative and scientific tasks to provide support to the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes at Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Manages, analyses, and queries a variety of long-term databases under the direction of center’s leadership
  • Oversee training and daily supervision of research interns under the direction of the assistant director overseeing the internship program
  • Manages center’s budgetary expenditures in coordination with the center’s director and zoo’s accounting department
  • Collects behavioral data on zoo-housed primates, as required
  • Assists with editing/production/distribution of reports, articles and books produced by center staff as needed
  • Manages general administrative duties, including travel planning, supply ordering, etc.
  • Coordinates the schedule and logistics for visiting scientists and guests under the supervisor of the center’s director or assistant director
  • Performs various administrative and scientific tasks, and other duties as assigned

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists with delivery of public programs and donor relations, as assigned
  • Assists with coordination of research activities, including sample collection and shipping, supply ordering, and scheduling
  • Presents data at scientific conferences (project dependent)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to multitask to ensure timely completion of all projects, both research and administrative
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, interns, visiting scientists, volunteers, and zoo guests
  • Strong knowledge using word processing, database, and analytic software (e.g., Word, Excel)
  • Ability to use video equipment and associated software for behavioral analysis
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally and via written communication
  • Ability to read and understand written and oral instructions
  • Some experience with (primate) behavioral data collection
  • Familiarity with scientific writing

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS


Bachelor’s degree in biology, psychology, anthropology or a related discipline preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


Ability to sit for long periods of time

Ability to work in open office environment

Ability to traverse zoo grounds


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS


Must be available to work some weekends or evenings as needed


This is an on-site position with a Monday- Friday schedule. Ability for hybrid work (work from home) schedule may be discussed in consultation with manager


Must provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination


Annual TB test required
