Who We Are

The Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS) at the University of Michigan Medical School is a first-of-its-kind basic science department focused on the learning sciences within health at all levels of scale: individuals, teams, organizations, and large-scale systems that span states and nations. Within DLHS, a research collaboration between DISPLAY Lab and the Knowledge Grid team is implementing a knowledge-based system to generate precision feedback messages for emails to healthcare professionals and teams.

Responsibilities*

The Research Assistant will work with a faculty members and staff in the Department of Learning Health sciences to support ongoing research to implement a knowledge base for precision feedback in anesthesia care. Responsibilities may include:

  • Writing vignettes that illustrate the function of a precision feedback system for a persona
  • Development of JSON-based metadata for models of feedback interventions, message templates, and performance measures
  • Development of demonstration data sets about clinical performance and recipient preferences for motivating performance information and feedback delivery
  • Software application testing and issue tracking
  • Data cleaning, data maintenance, and analysis
  • Literature searching and analysis

Required Qualifications*

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in a relevant area of study plus some graduate-level studies in health informatics or information science OR appropriate similar combination

Desired Qualifications*

Understanding of the role that ontologies (e.g., Performance Summary Display Ontology, Information Artifact Ontology) and data standards (e.g., RDF, OWL, JSON) play in health IT

Excellent time-management and project management skills

Proficient with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive),

Analytical skills

Communicates effectively, both written and verbal

Strong organizational skills / attention to detail

Adaptable to changing priorities and deadlines

High degree of professionalism

Diplomatic / uses good judgment

Team-player / collaborative

Demonstrates initiative and follow-through

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
