How you will be rewarded as a Research Assistant - Surgical Vet Operations in Madison, WI:

  • $25.50 per hour to start (May offer higher starting rate based on surgery experience)

Job Summary:

Perform veterinary laboratory procedures as well as advanced surgical requirements including but not limited to the following duties and responsibilities in compliance with appropriate SOP, Protocol, and Regulatory Agency guidelines. Will perform administrative roles within department. May have direct client/customer interactions. Knowledgeable of inter-site processes and procedures.

Essential Duties:

  • Reports all animal care concerns and becomes involved in resolution and appropriate corrective action, when necessary

  • Ensures that studies are conducted according to protocol, standard operating procedure documents, and government regulations

  • Can interpret and understand a complex protocol including numerous work streams

  • Understands Animal Care and Use Activities (ACUA) and reviews them prior to the initiation of any surgical procedure

  • Performs a data review of study materials with minimal quality control (QC) findings and understands the level of a quality assurance (QA) audit

  • Maintains client confidentiality at all times

  • May be involved in Process Excellence initiatives (e.g., Able to adapt techniques to new procedures or particular model needs which may include troubleshooting or researching different alternatives)

  • Effectively manages time and resources, e.g., equipment, rooms, feed, environmental requirements, study supplies, surgical supplies

  • May assume coordinator role, e.g., equipment coordinator, FSA ordering agent, forms administrator

  • May become involved in data management, e.g., may perform standard data analysis, standard report review, metric data entry, archiving

  • May become involved in client/customer management, e.g., may have specific client/customer communication regarding surgical or veterinary care study related activities

  • Performs multiple methods of euthanasia on multiple species

  • Performs advanced dosing and bleeding techniques and restraint procedures on multiple species

  • Performs anesthesia on multiple species

  • Set up for multiple different surgical procedures and performs aseptic surgical preparation in the surgery suite or vet treatment rooms.

  • Performs general physical exams, laboratory testing and dental cleanings on multiple species

  • Performs multiple small and large animal surgical procedures and suture techniques

  • Independently can perform veterinary directives and associated animal care activities (ex: treatments, physicals, dental cleanings, anesthesia, and aseptic surgical prep)

  • May mentor other technicians

  • Assists surgeon in large animal surgeries

Education Recommended:

  • Bachelor degree in Life Sciences, Associate degree in Laboratory Animal Technology or Associate degree in Veterinary Technology.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education.

  • Must be able to work in a laboratory setting with laboratory animals

  • AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician level is preferred, but not required

Experience Minimum Required:

  • Advanced computer knowledge.

  • Basic math skills.

  • Ability to accurately read and record information.

  • Minimum of 4 years applicable laboratory veterinary experience
