The HMS Center for Bioethics brings together the rich intellectual resources of the medical school faculty with health professionals and scientists from our affiliated teaching hospitals, departments across Harvard, and colleagues from other institutions worldwide to ensure that scientific progress, medical therapeutics, and health care practices proceed hand-in-hand with a reflection about the profound moral questions raised by advances in the life sciences. The Center for Bioethics at Harvard Medical School is hiring a full-time research assistant with a strong background or interest in qualitative methods and/or bioethics to work in NIH-funded studies on the ethical, clinical and legal implications of emerging technologies in neuroscience and genomics.

The research assistant will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Gabriel Lázaro-Muñoz, PhD, JD. Under the nominal direction of the PI, responsibilities include project planning, ensuring study protocol is followed, supporting grant writing, budget reporting and institutional review board applications, data collection, management and analysis, leading manuscripts and presentations.
  • Manage day-to-day activities of active projects, including IRB protocols and financial reports managing project files and organizing project activities, and meetings.
  • Schedule and organize project meetings, including developing agendas.
  • Assist in the development of project interview guides and surveys and conducting interviews with patients and clinicians.
  • Participate in coding and analysis of interview or survey data.
  • Prepare progress reports for key stakeholders and funders.
  • Help prepare presentations for dissemination of findings.
  • Provide research and writing support, including conducting comprehensive literature searches/summaries and assisting with manuscript preparation.
  • Maintain and update project websites.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • College background or equivalent experience, preferably in the field of a specific research study.
  • At least one year of related work experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor's degree in social sciences, neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, bioethics, or a related field preferred

The Research Assistant I – Non-Lab is part of the HCB administrative team whose mission is to support the Center’s faculty and students in teaching, service, and scholarship. As part of this unique and growing Center, this position works in a high-volume, fast-paced, and dynamic environment. All formal offers will be made by HMS Human Resources.

This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.

This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
