About People’s Action/Institute

People’s Action Institute (501c3), and its sister organization, People’s Action (501c4), are national progressive organizations supporting the mobilization and leadership of the grassroots in support of an agenda that reflects people over profits. People’s Action/Institute builds the power of poor and working people in rural, suburban, and urban areas to win change through issue campaigns and elections.

With offices in Washington, DC, and Chicago, IL, and remote staff across the country, we support and advance state-based and national fights for progressive policies on the environment, decarceration, health care, economic security, housing, education, and more. Our member organizations, nearly 40 organizations across 29 states, improve lives by running local- and state-level issue and electoral campaigns, leading statewide tables, and collectively coming together to change national policy and politics.

People’s Action/ Institute has a track record of leadership in coordinating field mobilization and advocacy in advancing an array of issues at the local, state, and federal levels. Our member organizations have won important victories at the national, state, and local levels, including health insurance for millions and the reversal of health care laws that discriminate based on citizenship, stopping Wall Street banks from selling predatory payday loans to their customers, and historic legislation like the Community Reinvestment Act to victory and the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The Opportunity

Have you ever wondered how you could contribute to helping organizations across the country seeking to give their communities their voices back? If that’s you, this would be a fantastic opportunity for anyone seeking to support and build power and sustainability with and through member organizations across an assigned region.

Overview of the Position

The Regional Director will be pivotal to the growth, support, and anchoring of base building and the organizing revival – both being crucial pieces of work that the network and the movement need to make our long-term agenda real.

As Regional Director, your typical day will include (but isn’t limited to):

Topline Engagement with Member Organizations in Your Assigned Region

• Build relationships with Executive Directors, Organizing Directors, and other staff through 1:1s
• Assess, navigate and connect member organization staff to relevant national staff/cohorts/campaigns/projects
• Track and report critical member organization information and metrics in Salesforce
• Communicate and turn out staff and members to significant network moments and events

Holding the Entire Region and Deeper Dives with Priority Member Organizations

• Build relationships, support, and foster connective tissue across the region with member organizations in the state and, when applicable, with allied networks and organizations.
• Support and pipeline leaders into the Training and “Training for Trainers” program
• Train organizers and leaders in the core fundamentals of organizing through facilitated peer-to-peer learning sessions, training, and coaching sessions, etc. (by direction and with the support of the Base Building and LD Director)
• Own the execution of at least one two-day training for your region

Take Ownership/Leadership in Critical Power-Building Events and Moments

• Own and/or lead events including but not limited to: Training for Trainers, Delegates Assembly, National Conventions, Movement Building Conferences, etc.

Other Duties as Assigned

The ideal Regional Director should have the following experience and qualifications:

• Strong commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections, both inside and outside the organization.
• Ability to work with diverse people and organizations
• 5 years of experience organizing with a power organization
• 2 years of management experience is required
• Must have held a senior leadership position at a power-building organization (Organizing Director, Deputy Director, Executive Director, etc.)
• Be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to keep commitments and not allow things to slip through the cracks; time and project management
• A strong orientation toward movement building that centers relationships and equity
• Ability to work independently without close oversight and as a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside People’s Action/Institute.
• High energy and passion for People’s Action/Institute’s mission are essential.

Compensation and Benefits:

Status: Full-time, Exempt, benefits-eligible

Salary Range: Level F - $95,000 - $130,000, commensurate with experience

Location: Can be based in our Chicago, IL, or Washington, D.C. office, but remote locations may be considered anywhere within the contiguous United States.

Travel Requirements (Yes/No): Yes. 2 Times a Month. Frequent travel to national events and to be with organizations in your designated region is required. Monthly travel is expected, with some months requiring additional travel to be discussed with the supervisor.

Benefits include: Health Insurance, Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance, Medical, on the first day of employment, Dependent Care Flex Spending Account after 90 days, 401(k) plan after 30 days, Long-Term Disability Insurance, Life Insurance, 10 paid holidays plus the last two weeks of the year that include Christmas Eve/Christmas Day as well as, New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day, and you accrue two weeks of vacation your first year of employment.

We believe in fair compensation for your work - no matter where you live. Our salary scale is comparable to salaries you would find in Chicago, IL, where our headquarters is based. It is based on your months/years of work experience. While we do not determine education as a factor in whether we hire someone to work for People’s Action Institute, we do factor in any relevant higher education experience that you have. To further counter pay inequities and inequality on the team, we have a non-negotiable compensation practice and provide opportunities for advancement for full-time employees based on performance evaluation. Your starting pay reflects where you sit within our salary scale and is based on the information you provide us on your resume. PAI continues to monitor wages through triennial compensation analysis to ensure that we continue to offer our prospective and current employees fair wages.
