Primary Function:
The manager of Quality Assurance and Technical Services is responsible for the overall quality system/program in the operation to include: Lead and promote the primary purpose of COS (Carlisle Operating System) which is to ensure there is an effective transformation from the traditional methods of running the business to new methods that incorporate both lean manufacturing and six sigma principles. Adherence of incoming raw materials to specifications, development and auditing of production process specifications, and development/adherence of finished goods grading standards. Provide leadership to prioritize and support implementation of new or modified process technologies. Development of the overall quality system is to be modeled after the ANSI Q90 series standard and developed and managed through the application and guidance of the principles and practices of ASQC. The incumbent is expected to apply results from quality audits, customer feedback and general process information (eg. defect reports, scrap levels, productivity information, maintenance downtime and repair records, etc.) to identify areas in the manufacturing area that warrant process development from a technical perspective. As department manager, the individual will then direct department technical resources to resolve problems and/or enhance process control. Oversees average of 15 direct reports.
Essential Duties:

  • Process development - Monitors plant scrap, rework, defect, productivity, finished goods quality, lab test results (eg. rheometers, tensilogic, brabender, mooney, specific gravity, heat aging), processing rates and identifies aspects of the plant process, including raw material specifications, requiring improvement or further refinement/development.
  • Department management: Provides leadership and direction for the plant quality program and process development function. Responsible for developing, monitoring, revising and channeling organizational resources to achieve specified operational goals.
  • Foster quality philosophy - Conducts various activities (eg. training, publicity, task teams, committees, etc.) that foster the commitment and understanding of all plant employees toward continuous improvement and Total Quality Management. Continuously revises quality operating procedures and process specifications to reflect this orientation. Helps develop plant and company policies as they relate overall plant operations.
  • Plant Quality and Technical Expert - Serves as the resident expert in statistical quality control techniques, application of COS problem solving techniques and root cause investigation, rubber, adhesive, and thermoplastic chemistry and compounding, process functioning and design, and development techniques. Provides coaching and format instruction to direct reports, peers, superiors, and other plant personnel in the above subject areas as needed and/or requested.

Work Environment:60% of time is spent in office, 40% is on the factory floor. Activities require desk work, meetings and factory troubleshooting of equipment/process. Work is fast paced and often requires long hours and work to be done at home.

Hours Worked:7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40+ hours/week). The core hours are required to interface with shift and daylight personnel. The operation runs 24 hours/day and sometimes on weekend, requiring additional hours outside of core time.

Educational Requirements:

  • Education - BS degree in Chemistry and/or Engineering with strong background in polymer sciences. College course work in management, finance, business, and statistics.
  • Equivalency - Baccalaureate degree (minimum) with college level course work in chemistry, calculus, physics, polymer science, quality, finance, business, management, and accounting.

Experience:

  • Eight years of progressively responsible rubber processing experience preferably with EPDM compounds. Experience should include quality techniques and application and supervision of technical personnel with both plant and external support group assignment.
  • Equivalency - None

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting - desk, meetings, PC.
  • Standing - observing process, gathering information.
  • Walking - visit all areas of 450,000 sq. ft. plant.
  • Lifting - up to 50 lbs., laboratory equipment, production samples, finished goods, etc.
  • Stooping - to get around plant equipment, observe the process, visit roofs to evaluate customer needs and complaint, examine finished product.
  • Travel - to attend training needed to maintain scientific skills and evaluate customer needs/concerns.
  • Bending - to observe process territory, examine plant equipment, evaluate product applications on rooftop, examine finished products.
  • Climbing - around plant equipment to observe functioning and overall process. Also to visit roofing job sites to examine product applications.
  • Sensing - sight, hearing, and feeling. Must be able to look, see, hear, feel and smell to observe rubber during processing and identify changes and potential causes for such. Must be able to effectively communicate in meetings, on the telephone, in the office and on the factory floor.
