We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Public Safety Technician, working with the Yuma Police Department. The ideal candidate will be responsible for responding to routine calls for services such as found, lost, and stolen property, delayed burglaries, and stolen vehicles.

Under basic supervision, provides support to Yuma Police Department (YPD) sworn police officers by responding to routine calls for service such as found, lost and stolen property, delayed burglaries, and stolen vehicles; conducts field investigations, collects evidence and details of crimes, and writes reports; completes prisoner processing and transporting, assists with other Police support and community service programs.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responds to calls for service which do not require the presence of a sworn Police Officer.
  • Investigates crime and accident scenes, gathers physical evidence, takes measurements and photographs, interviews victims and witnesses and takes detailed notes.
  • Writes detailed police reports for review by supervisor.
  • Collects, secures, stores and monitors property and evidence, ensuring appropriate documentation of chain of custody for items.
  • Destroys or returns evidence following established policies and procedures.
  • Prepares bookings; completes paperwork, takes photographs, fingerprints and other tasks related to prisoner processing.
  • Assists YPD Officers by performing routine support duties; duties may vary according to job assignment.
  • Provides relevant testimony in court/legal proceedings.
  • Assists YPD Detectives by performing various support duties during criminal and civil investigations.
  • Assists YPD Public Affairs Unit by performing public presentations, various support duties involving media, public relations and community programs.
  • Assists with neighborhood policing, community service programs and community events.
  • Copies and disseminates a variety of print, electronic and/or other media as requested.
  • Assists quartermaster with inventory and warehouse duties, and special assignments.
  • Schedules and conducts security inspections in the field.
  • Transports juvenile or adult arrestees to their respective detention centers for booking.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; and one year of customer service, clerical, and/or computer experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Experience in a law enforcement environment is preferred. Must pass a polygraph examination and background check.

Knowledge of:

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Safe work practices and occupational hazards in accident scenes and traffic environments.
  • State laws and YPD policies governing management of property and evidence.
  • Geography, roads, and landmarks of City and surrounding areas.

Skill in:

  • Interviewing victims and witnesses.
  • Dealing with physically and/or verbally uncooperative, distraught, or hostile individuals.
  • Interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Following and communicating verbal and written instructions.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.


LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment and in the field. Required to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects. May be required to be "on-call". Must be able to work shift work and participate in mandatory shift/assignment rotation.

POLICE DEPARTMENT AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS
The City of Yuma Police Department will automatically disqualify any individual who has at any time;


  • Engaged in reported/unreported criminal behavior in such a manner that if hired would be detrimental to Yuma Police Department
  • Been dishonorably discharged from the United States armed forces
  • Illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or transported for sale marijuana or dangerous drugs/narcotics
  • Illegally used marijuana/dangerous drugs/narcotic drugs for any purpose within the past year
  • Have a pattern of abusing prescription medication
  • Convicted of or adjudged to have violated traffic regulations governing the movement of vehicles with such a frequency so as to indicate disrespect for the traffic laws and disregard for the safety of other persons on the highway within the past three years.
  • Been previously employed with a law enforcement agency and since has committed or violated federal, state, or city laws pertaining to criminal activity
  • Lied during any stage of the hiring process, falsified any information on the application or background questionnaire
  • Conviction of domestic violence crime, misdemeanor, or felony or conviction of a lesser charge, which at the time of occurrence was a domestic violence crime
