Project BASIC (Better Attitudes and Skills In Children) is a school-based, mental health early-intervention program which targets students from Kindergarten to third-grade. The Project BASIC Child Development Specialist provides early identification and intervention through classroom instruction promoting positive attitudes and mental health wellness concepts throughout the school.

Some of the tasks of a Project BASIC Specialist are:

1. Organizing, planning and implementing Project BASIC classroom instruction in the assigned school.

2. Providing individual and/or group support counseling for students, teachers and/or parents when needed.

4. Becoming familiar with community resources to refer students and families to appropriate community agencies when needed.

5. Collecting and maintaining data required for reports and program evaluations.

7. Attending training sessions and team meetings with the Regional BASIC Coordinator.

It will be important for you to have knowledge of educational psychology, methods of classroom instruction, building community relations, and public speaking. You should also possess a strong professional orientation to mental health education and a basic knowledge of counseling theories and techniques. The ability to clearly design, develop, and implement mental health programming for elementary school children is required.

Must possess a Bachelor's degree in education, social work, or related area. A Master’s degree and experience in public schools and/or counseling are preferred. Work is primarily school-based, but the Specialist is employed by VBHCS.

The schedule for this position is a school calendar (summers and holidays off) but pay is year-round.
