Product Engineer

Location: 5107 Kissell Avenue, Altoona, PA

Summary

Primary technical point of contact and in-house expert for a wide range of mechanical design projects for customers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for creating complete design packages from customer order through manufacturing and install. To include 2D/3D drawing package with BOO/BOM.
  • Oversees a team of engineers, CAD Techs, and engineering interns to accurately and efficiently produce sound and cost effective designs.
  • Generate performance reviews of employees. Responsible for departmental hiring and termination of direct reports.
  • Coordinates and directs projects, making detailed plans to accomplish goals and directing the integration of technical activities.
  • Provides technical guidance and ensures sound engineering documentation is provided to manufacturing.
  • Working on cross-functional teams, serves as the technical expert to help create project timelines, budgets, and customer communication.
  • Provide training and trouble-shooting for technical issues, both in-house and customer site.
  • Performs administrative functions such as reviewing others work, writing reports, and justification of expenditures and provides input for service and procurement departments.
  • Assures the engineered product conforms to UL, State, and National code requirements.
  • Assists in maintaining departmental library of regulatory standards codes.
  • Analyze cost reduction ideas, and reviewing for manufacturability.
  • Initiates conferences and liaise with production, project management and sales staff to discuss project specifications and procedures for prototypes and new product startup.
  • Recommends changes, reviews progress, and approves cost estimates or proposals.
  • Writes work instructions for Install-trouble shooting documentation and production process manuals.
  • Capable of producing complete RFP product and installation estimates
  • Responsibility to create, review, and understand engineering specifications, drawings, BOMs, and other technical information.
  • Works with customers, production team, and others to lead new product introduction and continual improvement projects through all aspects of the project life cycle.
  • Provides technical support in product design and mechanical products to both in-house project groups and customer.
  • Direct responsibility for implementation and compliance to established engineering procedures.
  • Work with the Director of Engineering to enhance technical skills within the engineering department, mentoring technical staff and encouraging continuing education.
  • 30% of time dedicated to managing a design team, 70% of time working on design projects.
Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversee various personnel in support of Engineering in their daily duties and assign tasks as needed.

Education and/or Experience:
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or Applied Sciences
  • 8 - 15 years' experience with Mechanical design
  • Proficiency in both classical and numerical methods of solving mechanical analytical challenges
  • Expertise in Mechanical drawing, design and geometric tolerancing
  • Experience with CAD, PRO-E, Inventor, and Solid Works
  • Experience with FEA stress analysis for fatigue, shock, vibration and wind load
  • Experience with sign manufacturing materials and processes, including thermoformed plastics, aluminum, steel fabrication and paint
