Join a world-class academic healthcare system, Ingalls Memorial Hospital, as a Point of Care Coordinator in the Lab at Ingalls Main Campus. The Point of Care Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the quality control and quality performance improvement functions of point of care testing done by non-laboratory caregivers.


Job Summary

Responsible for coordinating the quality control and quality performance improvement functions of point of care testing done by non-laboratory caregivers. Participates in planning, organizing, documenting, and providing technical and quality performance services for aspects of testing performed at point of care sites and in designated non-centralized laboratories. Provides technical consultation and standardizes laboratory policies and procedures for use by clinical staff. This may include oversight of testing personnel performance and adherence to SOPs; development and implementation of new procedures, methods, and instrumentation; maintaining and/or improving the quality of work performed, within the framework of compliance with all applicable regulatory/accreditation requirements including CLIA standards and College of American Pathology (CAP) guidelines.


Essential Job Functions

  • Participates in oversight of point of care testing operations, ensuring the establishment of appropriate procedures throughout all phases of specimen handling and testing.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of quality control programs to ensure the highest quality results to patients and physicians.
  • Responsible for ensuring that result reporting activities are completed within mandated timeframes. This may include audits of test results and test reports for accuracy.
  • Provides consultative service and participates in the process of verifying compliance with all regulatory requirements as well as institutional policies and procedures to maintain medical center licensure and accreditation status for point of care testing.
  • Performs tasks related to quality and compliance monitoring and preparing documentation to substantiate required compliance and monitoring activities.
  • Ensures institutional readiness for all internal and external inspections of point of care testing resources.
  • Participates in preparation of testing procedures and provides updates as needed according to CLIA standard, CAP guidelines, and institutional requirements.
  • Participates in training, orientation and ongoing continuing education of personnel using point of care testing resources.
  • Prepares appropriate competency and training documents and ensures training documentation is current and available for inspections.
  • Participates as needed in Laboratory quality improvement activities.
  • Evaluates new instruments, products, procedures, workflows, and methods in order to provide recommendations to the point of care Director concerning the acquisition of equipment or changes in operations.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate inventory of supplies. Interacts with supply chain offices and vendors as required.
  • Ensures appropriate operation of all point of care equipment.
  • Verifies that quality control monitoring and preventive maintenance of equipment is completed and documented as outlined in laboratory procedure manual.
  • Works with Hospital Information Services and Laboratory Information Services to ensure electronic connectivity between point of care devices and institutional systems to facilitate transmission of test orders and results.
  • Works with administration to facilitate appropriate and complete charge capture and posting for point of care technical services performed.


Required Qualifications:

  • Must satisfy CLIA’88 qualification requirements for testing personnel performing high complexity testing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or related field from an accredited college or university. Certification or eligibility as medical technologist, (MT) or specialist (Sxx) through American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent.
  • High degree of computer literacy; knowledge and ability to use laboratory/hospital information systems and database spreadsheet and presentation software; willingness to learn new software applications (e.g. business analysis software, content management systems, etc.).
  • Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory equipment and laboratory testing methodologies.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply QC/QA/QI principles and processes required.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to Clinical Laboratory operations preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to interact in a professional manner with individuals at all levels.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a general clinical laboratory preferred
  • Certification or eligibility as medical technologist (MT) through American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent preferred
