This is supervisory, very specialized, and highly skilled technical work in the maintenance and repair of industrial treatment and pumping equipment; process controls and instrumentation; and advanced electronics and electrical systems, including equipment calibration from component level up to and including system loop calibrations, at the Cosme Water Plant in Northwest Hillsborough County, and Oberly and Washington Terrace Pumping Stations located on the North East & West Side of St. Petersburg. Work involves inspecting, servicing, calibrating and maintaining sophisticated SCADA equipment, programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), variable frequency drives (VFD’s), electrical systems, telemetering devices, monitoring instruments and control instrumentation; analyzing and diagnosing mechanical and electrical/electronic equipment malfunctions; estimating manpower, materials and supplies; providing training and guidance to skilled maintenance staff; maintaining records of inspection and repair activities including regulatory reports, calibration certificates and safety; and assisting with planning, scheduling and promulgating a preventive maintenance program for all plant equipment. Due to the sensitivity and required accuracy of plant equipment operations, work requires considerable independent judgment, the exercise of highly specialized technical maintenance skills; the ability to make methodical, thorough inspections to determine operating conditions and needed repairs of plant and pumping instrument and treatment equipment; and the ability to formulate and successfully carry out repair plans. Because of the critical responsibilities of this class, an employee in this class must be available to respond to emergency conditions and report to work at the discretion of management. Work assignments are received in the form of oral and written instructions including work orders from a computerized work order system. Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through progress meetings, observation, personal contact, conferences, and the effective and accurate operation of the equipment serviced.

Salary: $25.17 - $39.62 Hourly

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications. Applicants must:

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.
  • Have considerable progressive experience at the journeyman level in the maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, certification and repair of industrial plant or water and/or wastewater treatment equipment, monitoring instruments, electrical devices, and mechanical systems, including use of the Hart Analyzer Protocol.
  • Have knowledge of programmable controller software (PLC) including basic ladder logic concepts, installation, setup, experience using radio and communication equipment including use of the Allen Bradley Communication Protocol, and troubleshooting.
  • Have considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Have skill and proficiency utilizing Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Possess computer and data entry skills.
  • Be available to work varied shifts and overtime, to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; and must be able to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, you must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.

Desirable Qualifications. Preferred Applicants:

  • Have supplemented their education through training and related coursework in mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Are able to proficiently operate computer word processing, spreadsheet and database software; and are able to quickly learn and proficiently operate the City’s specialized tracking, recordkeeping and troubleshooting software.
  • Are able to read and understand blueprints, construction diagrams and schematics.
  • Have experience leading and instructing subordinates in plant maintenance work.
  • Have experience troubleshooting PLC and understanding PLC ladder logic.
  • Have experience calibrating and troubleshooting process instrumentation related to flow, level, pressure, and chemical analyzers.
  • Are skilled in the use of the specialized tools of the trade.
