POSITION SUMMARY:

The Plan Examiner / Reviewer performs residential and commercial building plans examination for the construction permit process. Other duties include responding to requests for information, researching codes, investigating incidents, maintaining documentation, and supporting the Building Official and Building Division of the Development Services Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Plan Examiner / Reviewer provides services in the following areas of residential and commercial construction including, but not limited to:
  • Reviewing construction documents to confirm compliance with State and Local laws and regulations
  • Examining construction documents (plans, specifications, etc.) for conformity with applicable building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, gas, zoning, and flood control codes, municipal ordinances, and related regulations as required
  • Performing Plan Review activities including reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and blueprints quickly and accurately, to compare them with construction in progress
  • Approving or disapproving construction documents and communicating results to appropriate design professionals (architect, engineer, etc.)
  • Documenting reason for disapproval of plans or specifications with the appropriate code section quoted for reference and notifying the design professional of the discrepancy, providing a narrative as to the circumstances of disapproval
  • Providing technical assistance to property owners and public agencies to assist them in understanding and resolving complaints or problems that citizens may encounter
  • Consulting with others on results of inspections to get suggestions or recommendations for corrective action.
  • Performing inspections and permitting as needed
  • Providing administrative support to the Building Official and Development Services Department.
  • Preparing correspondence and reports
  • Maintaining plan review logs and records
  • Addressing complaints brought forward by development community and residents
  • Other related support services required by the City

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • One-year experience in plan review and examination related services

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Available transportation for work related duties
  • Certification as a residential energy inspector / plans examiner as granted by International Code Council (ICC) or the ability to obtain required certifications in accordance with an agreed upon performance plan as established upon hire for the employee
  • Certification as a Commercial Plans Examiner as granted by the ICC or the ability to obtain required certifications in accordance with an agreed upon performance plan as established upon hire for the employee
  • Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of the following pre-employment checks:
    • Criminal background check
    • Controlled substance screening
