Overview:
The Genomics, Ethics, and Translational Research (GET), program within RTI International’s GenOmics, Bioinformatics, and Translational (GOBOT) Research Center is seeking a part-time parent mentor to join our diverse, multidisciplinary team conducting an early intervention study called PIXI (Parents and Infants Interaction Intervention). The purpose of the PIXI Program is to provide psychoeducation, early intervention, and resource referral to caregivers of infants who receive a diagnosis of rare neurogenetic conditions during the first year of life.

The PIXI project is searching for a PIXI Parent Mentor to work with parents and their infants diagnosed with rare neurogenetic conditions during the first year of life.

GET scientists conduct pilot and full-scale research studies, evaluate programs, and provide technical assistance to support evidence-based strategies that inform policy and healthcare practice, with a focus on individuals with rare diseases or a special health care need. The program is seeking a research assistant who can draw on personal experience as a parent of a child with a rare disease to provide support and resources to caregivers through remote virtual Zoom meetings and phone calls. The PIXI Family Mentor will advocate for PIXI clients to obtain necessary services and supports such as Early Intervention, disorder specific clinics, benefits, and other supports as needed.

Responsibilities:
Other responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Assist caregivers with finding resources, advising the caregiver of processes and encouraging follow through with proposed resolutions, locating necessary supports or provide other assistance as needed.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all information related to the participant and their engagement with the research study.

  • Work in collaboration with the PIXI team, including RTI International and other partner agency staff. Attend staff meetings, agency training(s), and conferences. Participate in case conferences/reviews and supervision with PIXI staff.

  • Develop resources and printed materials for families.

  • Join early intervention sessions with PIXI staff and/or participant’s early intervention case managers and providers. Directly communicate with EI providers around case consultation.

  • Using effective time management skills to complete required job duties.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Personal experience and knowledge of Angelman Syndrome
  • Knowledge of Early Intervention services
  • A minimum of 2 years of college/higher education
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work successfully and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Be willing to complete parent mentor training

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong connections with Angelman community
  • Training in mental health counseling, early childhood education, early intervention, pediatric health, family support
