We are currently recruiting for the position of:


Payroll Specialist - Modesto, CA

The Payroll Specialist supports the weekly processing of the company-wide payroll and is responsible for one or more of the specialized Payroll functions: garnishment/child support processing, Trust Fund reporting, management payroll, step-in-grade processing, payroll tax deposits and reporting, vacation and termination processing, sick leave processing, on demand check processing, payroll processing. The position will work with the various systems in accomplishing the tasks and may assist in direction of the Payroll Clerks.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Process wage garnishments, child support orders, and taxable adjustments, as assigned
  • Responsible for payroll administration of Trust Funds; reports eligibility of Health & Welfare and pension hours to Trust Fund(s); submits monthly reports and contribution payments
  • Respond to payroll related inquiries made by external agencies (i.e. Child Support, Unemployment, etc.) for hours and/or wages
  • Calculate and maintain all time off categories
  • Maintain and update employee information in payroll system, including deductions and withholdings
  • Perform audit and works closely with managers to ensure compliance with Time and Attendance system
  • Enter data into payroll system; computes wages and deductions and posts to payroll records
  • Process final check, including calculating final dues owed and ensuring various key elements are secured, (e.g. hours worked, benefit time owed, deductions, etc.) along with appropriate allocations
  • Coordinate tax notices/issues with the tax filing service and/or taxing agencies to resolve the tax related issues
  • Enter employee legally required and voluntary deductions in payroll system
  • Calculate and file bi-weekly Federal and State payroll taxes; sends report of payroll taxes to Accounting and Cash Management departments
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Hiring pay range: $21.11 - 30.36

Requirements (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Knowledge of garnishment/child support processing
  • Knowledge and experience working in a unionized payroll and experience with Trust Fund reporting
  • Knowledge of tax deposit requirements; demonstrated knowledge in calculation of gross payroll to net payroll and working with a variety of deduction and pay codes.


  • Ability to work with confidential information
  • Ability to work with Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, basic Microsoft Word skills
  • Skilled and Proficient 10-key by touch
  • Ability to multi-task while being detail oriented
  • Ability to communicate (verbally, in writing and listening)
  • Knowledge of Mathematics including strong math skills

Education: Two-year college degree and/or equivalent experience/training.

Experience: Minimum of two years of directly related experience

Other: Maintain timely and regular attendance. Must be able to work overtime, when needed.

Physical: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, stoop, use stairs, reach, pull and lift objects
