Part-Time Research Associate-Barbercheck Lab Job at Penn State University
JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Barbercheck Lab at Penn State University Park is seeking to hire a Part-Time Lab Assistant to help with both field and lab work this summer. Our research focuses on insect and soil collection and processing from our organic research site.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITES:
- Assist in collecting soil samples at our research site.
- Assist in insect sampling events in the field such as:
- Placing emergence traps in corn and soybean.
- Placement of sentinel prey in corn and soybean.
- Measuring early season pest damage in corn.
- Scouting for predators in corn plants.
- Measuring Fall Armyworm and Western Bean Cutworm feeding damage in corn.
- Placing sentinel egg masses in corn.
- Process soil samples so they can be analyzed for various biological and chemical measures.
- Data entry.
- Assist in the general cleanliness and organization of the lab.
- Other duties as assigned.
DURATION OF APPOINTMENT:
- Mid-Late May-August 2023
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong attention to detail.
- Willing to work flexible hours.
- Ability to work independently.
- Enjoy working in the lab and outside.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Ability to follow instructions to complete involved tasks.
- Manual dexterity to crumble soil and perform precise, detailed work.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work such as lifting equipment, standing for long periods of time, working in hot/cold/wet environments, etc.
- Comply with all procedures, policies, and health and safety regulations.
- This job requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid US driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

LOCATION AND COMMITMENTS
- The work will be at the Agricultural Sciences and Industries Building on the University Park campus AND AT Rock Springs Agricultural station.
- ~ 20 hours per week.
- Work would occur Monday through Friday 7 am to 3:30 pm.
