Spartanburg Methodist College is seeking a Part-Time Evening Library Assistant.
Reporting Responsibilities: The Evening Library Assistant reports to the Director of the Library.
Job Summary: Position will be between 16-25 evening hours per week (primarily during the fall and spring semesters), based on the College academic calendar and library schedule.
Position is limited to less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year. No benefits.
Working Conditions: This work is normally performed in an office environment and will require significant contact with students and faculty members. The library is two stories with no elevator.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • The evening librarian provides assistance during evening library services, Sunday through Thursday
  • Is the first point of contact when students and staff enter and will provide friendly customer service
  • In the absence of full-time librarians, serves as person in charge of the library building and circulation area
  • Assists library staff and campus police with providing security for the building and enforcing library rules/regulations
  • Assists in the supervision and training of evening work study student assistants
  • Provides basic reference services by developing familiarity with all library database, software, resources, and equipment
  • Assists in the shelving, shelf reading, inventory and weeding of all library materials
  • Compiles usage statistics and reports for evening hours
  • Performs other tasks and duties as requested
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs as well as a willingness to learn new technology
  • Ability to communicate with and work well with all members of the library team
  • Basic knowledge of library software, systems and processes
Required Physical Activities:
  • Must be able to routinely lift and carry up to 20 pounds up and down the stairs
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, stand, move from one area of the building to another on a regular basis, sit and use a computer for a long period of time
  • Manual and physical dexterity needed to operate a computer keyboard and handle paper documents
  • Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on a computer display screen, in hand-written form, and printed on paper
  • Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person and by telephone

Education:

  • Associates Degree of equivalent
  • Previous library work experience preferred
FLSA: Non-exempt
