Tampa Bay Watch, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering a healthy Tampa Bay watershed through community-driven restoration projects, education programs, and outreach initiatives. Tampa Bay Watch, Inc. is working to preserve the delicate ecological balance that exists in Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay Watch performs a variety of habitat restoration and protection activities throughout the year utilizing thousands of volunteers annually to help the bay recover from its environmental problems. Education is a vital part of Tampa Bay Watch’s mission. The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center is a significant new addition to the education and conservation efforts of Tampa Bay Watch and is integral to the advancement of our mission.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Eco-Vessel Coordinator, the Part-Time Environmental Educator will create an engaging educational experience for patrons of the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center aboard our 45’ Coast Guard Certified eco-vessel, The Discovery.

This position is responsible for delivering educational programs aboard The Discovery and other platforms that represent Tampa Bay Watch, to include leading eco-tours, hosting field trips and charters, and assisting with research. The Part-Time Environmental Educator also supports the Boat Captain to maintain a clean, safe, and memorable environment with the goal of creating a connection between patrons and the Tampa Bay Estuary.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Learn and adhere to the Tampa Bay Watch, Inc. mission, standards and policies
  • Answer general organizational questions and educate guests regarding The Pier, Tampa Bay Watch, Inc., The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center, The Discovery eco-vessel, and surrounding areas
  • Assist as needed with daily eco-vessel ticket sales
  • Properly greet and welcome eco-vessel patrons by being attentive, helpful and courteous
  • Engage in effective communication with supervisors, co-workers and guests alike, maintaining a positive attitude that contributes to a productive, fun, and educational work environment
  • Participate in regularly scheduled departmental meetings and trainings in order to ensure open and positive communication
  • Prepare for and deliver eco-based programs in an efficient and engaging manner
  • Participate in the maintenance, inventory, and care of department supplies and program materials
  • Deploy, set, monitor and retrieve a 12 ft. otter trawl net while communicating with Boat Captain and crew and maintaining a safe work environment
  • Handle and identify local species of invertebrates and fishes
  • Assist with the NOAA dolphin identification and tracking program and other citizen science projects
  • Assist with tracking and cataloging all collected organisms to uphold necessary permitting
  • Follow protocols to ensure the overall safety of patrons aboard the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center eco-vessel and throughout the St. Petersburg Pier
  • Serve as a mate aboard USCG-certified eco-vessel, The Discovery
  • Assist passengers with embarkation and debarkation
  • As needed, assist Boat Captain with docking the vessel and properly securing lines
  • Take part in boat safety trainings and drills
  • Meet all safety requests of the Boat Captain and take direction to assist in emergency situations and drills
  • Maintain knowledge of emergency protocols and act quickly and decisively in emergency situations
  • Assist with other eco-vessel related Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to endure the Florida heat and other weather conditions. Able to spend extended periods of time performing physical activities like standing and bending with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Environmental Educators must be able to maintain the activity levels needed to perform all position duties.

Education, Knowledge, and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Science or Education field
  • One year plus experience teaching in an informal or formal setting
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week
  • Willingness to work weekends and holidays
  • High level of comfort in and on the water, experience boating or working aboard an oceanic vessel preferred
  • Familiarity with Florida coastal environments and the skills to teach in Florida’s ever-changing environment
  • Experience deploying trawl nets and ability to identify local invertebrates and coastal fishes preferred
  • Scientific research and/or data collection experience preferred
  • Public speaking and audience management skills with an aptitude for teaching multiple science topics to a diverse audience in an energetic, hands-on manner
  • American Red Cross (First Aid, AED, CPR) preferred
  • Waterfront Lifeguarding Certification preferred
  • USCG Boater Safety Course or willingness to take upon hire
  • Enrollment in USCG Consortium drug testing program
  • Capacity to clear Level II Background Screening
  • Basic computer skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suit and willingness to learn CRM management software
