Job Description of Infant/Toddler Caregiver

Location: First United Methodist Church Weekday Ministries

Minimum Qualifications

Experience in licensed child care program required. Child Development Associate's (CDA) certificate, or college courses in child development or early childhood education preferred.

Job Requirements

4. Knowledge of developmental stages consistent with your age group.

5. Willingness to participate in continuing education opportunities, such as conferences and meetings related to child development, child safety and other areas.

6. Knowledge of child abuse regulations.

7. Knowledge of current CPR and first-aid operations.

8. Have a reliable texting device and an active email address.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Care and Development of Children

1. Develop a responsive, accepting, and consistent relationship with infants; support positive bonding between children and adults, including parents and caregivers.

2. Interact frequently with infants; express respect for and affection toward them by smiling, touching, holding, and speaking to the children throughout the day.

3. Treat all children equally without regard for gender or cultural background.

4. Be responsive to each child with his/her own temperament and developmental level.

5. Modify expectations of behavior according to the age level of the child.

6. Maintain self-control at all times.

7. Encourage development of independent skills and choices in activities, while fostering trust and self-control.

8. Use positive guidance techniques to redirect or correct behavior.

9. Use routine activities as opportunities for learning.

Classroom Environment

1. Prepare weekly lesson plans with activities and experiences that reflect knowledge of infant development.

2. Maintain bulletin board on classroom door.

3. Keep individual records of each child's progress throughout the school year.

4. Plan with and clarify expectations for any assistant who may be assigned to the class.

5. Follow FUMC Weekday Ministries policies and procedures for maintaining proper hygiene in regard to children's hands and faces, diaper changing, toileting, eating, and sanitizing of toys.

6. Be responsible for classrooms, supplies, and equipment. Report items needing repair or replacement and submit requests for additional equipment to the director.

7. Cooperate with the teachers who share the room, including Sunday morning teachers.

8. Maintain a classroom copy of the FUMC handbook; read and follow policies.

9. Rotate classroom materials weekly.

Parent Relations

1. Communicate with parents frequently about their child's behavior and progress, especially at drop-off and pick-up times, but also throughout the day utilizing Procare.

2. Inform parents of any health concerns such as runny noses, irritability, or unusual behavior.

3. Encourage parent involvement with Weekday Ministries and inform them of opportunities for participation.

4. Support mothers who are breast-feeding their infants by providing an open and encouraging environment for them to come and nurse.

5. Work with parents in individual and group conferences.

6. Complete the Frog Street Assessment every nine weeks for each child in the class; then place the assessment in the child’s classroom file to be passed on to their next teacher the next year.

Professional Standards

1. Abide by Weekday Ministries philosophy of child guidance and follow practices and procedures for dealing positively with young children.

2. Share ideas and materials freely with other caregivers to continually improve the knowledge and abilities of all staff.

3. Attend conferences and meetings related to child development.

4. Keep parents and children's issues in confidence.

5. Report any suspected case of child abuse to the Director.

6. Present a positive attitude in dealing with children and parents at all times. Do not allow personal problems to interfere with the level of care you provide the children.

7. Arrive at work 5 minutes before scheduled time.
