An opportunity is available for a positive, outgoing, self-motivated, hard-working, detail-oriented, versatile individual to fill a Resident Park Services Specialist position at Dunns Creek State Park in Pomona Park, Florida.

This Park Services Specialist is involved with all delegated aspects of park operations and management at Dunns’ Creek, including administration, maintenance, resource management, visitor services, and protection. This position is responsible for a large amount of the resource management that takes place at the park which consists of 6330 acres within 37 total burn zones of which 4,214 are “burnable” acres.

The Park Services Specialist also serves as coordinator of volunteers, interpretive programs, promotional efforts, and special events.

Located south of a sharp bend in the St. Johns River, more than 6,200 acres of natural communities are represented in Dunns Creek State Park.


These natural communities include sandhills covered with longleaf pines, wiregrass and sand pine scrub. These protect several endangered and threatened species such as the gopher tortoise, fox squirrels and other native animals.

Pay:

Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for establishing and maintaining resource management activities; for providing visitor education and services; for maintaining and improving operations and facilities; and for establishing and maintaining good public and volunteer relations.


Participates in planning and conducting of resource management activities by implementing resource management techniques required in managing and restoring natural communities, which includes but is not limited to prescribed burning. Participates in the execution of all facets of prescribed fire.


Assists with the assessing, planning and implementation of maintaining and improving park operations and facilities.


Provide research planning, coordination and conducts the interpretation of the natural and cultural resources within the park, including but not limited to: guided walks, campfire programs, tours, recreation skills programs and special events.


Performs other related park duties as required including but not limited to: visitor services such as checking in of campers, sale of merchandise, disseminate information, and provide assistance to campers.


Plans and conducts community outreach activities to expand public understanding of the Florida Park Service resource management and protection objectives. Represents the park and Florida Park Service to outside agencies and organizations, disseminating information and promoting outdoor recreational opportunities provided by the park.


Assists in designing and organizing volunteer recruitment for service programs and special events. Monitors and defines suitable park volunteer needs. Plans and conducts volunteer orientation and training sessions. Plans, organizes and conducts in-service training programs to meet the needs of the park’s employees. Serve as liaison between Park and Citizen Support Organization.


Researches the history of this division facility, both cultural and natural, and develops plans for restoration and implementation. Advises on the preservation, restoration, and appearance of historical and archeological sites. Performs related work as required.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Knowledge of: Florida ecosystems and resource management techniques required to manage/restore natural communities; cultural resources preservation and restoration techniques; technical report writing and effective verbal and written communication principles and techniques.


Skill in: producing photographs and slides.


Ability to: research, plan and prepare educational, interpretive and promotional materials and programs; compile, organize and analyze data, programs and proposed projects; work rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays; effectively present programs and dealing with the public training, etc.; maintain a valid driver license; operate personal computer; successfully meet position-specific DRP Burn Standards for Prescribed Fire.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Florida Class E driver’s license or an out-of-state class equivalent driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of annual moderate pack test.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous park service experience preferred.
