Job Summary

Technician Open Space performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled duties and maintenance tasks within specific guidelines on Open Space and Trails (OST) properties throughout the County including parks, open space, buildings and grounds.

Job Responsibilities

  • Sprays herbicides on weeds listed on the Pitkin County Designated Noxious Weed List found within all County OST assets.
  • Performs a variety of property maintenance and improvement tasks to include trash removal, fence maintenance, mowing, trimming, and irrigation installation and repair.
  • Assists with construction and demolition.
  • Builds and maintains new and existing trails.
  • Repairs and installs signage.
  • Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

This position follows a sequence:
  • Level I:
    • Up to 1 year of experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance, including experience with hand tools, power tools, small engines (lawn mowers, weed whackers, etc).
    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
    • First Aid/CPR Certification (required within 1st year).
    • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Level II (in addition to Level I):
    • 1-3 years of experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance, including experience in operation of large trucks, trailers, and small machinery (excavators, wheel loaders, skid steers, tractors).
    • Basic knowledge of plant/noxious weed ID; familiarity with Pitkin County geography as it pertains to roads, trails, and open spaces.
    • S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaw Certification required.
    • DOT Flagger Certification required.
  • Level III (in addition to Level II):
    • 3+ years of experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance, proficiency in operation of large trucks, trailers, and small machinery (excavators, wheel loaders, skid steers, tractors).
    • Thorough knowledge of plant/noxious weed ID and experience with invasive weed management techniques/practices; complete knowledge of Pitkin County geography as it pertains to roads, trails, and open spaces; possesses basic trade skills.

Knowledge Of:
  • Safety policies, procedures, and practices for basic construction industry standards.
  • Inventory management methods and practices.
  • Personal protective equipment and proper use.
  • Equipment troubleshooting methods.
  • General maintenance practice and procedures.
Skill In:
  • Organizing and prioritizing work to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks.
  • Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, under pressure, and in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Microsoft Office Products and Google Suite.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Operating tools and equipment safely.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Majority of work is performed outdoors with exposure to inclement weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, and potentially dangerous tools and equipment. Ability to hike moderate distances.
  • Hikes up to 10 miles in a day.
  • Frequently lifts up to 30 lbs. and carries up to 50 feet; occasionally lifts up to 30 lbs. from floor to knuckle; frequently lifts up to 20 lbs. from shoulder to overhead; occasionally pushes and pulls items weighing up to 100 lbs.; occasionally performs bi-lateral lift of 30 lbs. and carries up to 50 ft.; frequently lifts up to 35 lbs. from waist level and lowers to floor.
  • Frequently bends at waist, squats, kneels, shovels, and rakes.
  • Occasionally climbs ladder; must be able to stand and balance on ladder
  • Regularly walks over uneven terrain.
