The hours for this position will be the PM shift which is 2:00pm-10:30pm ONLY.

Class Schedule:

All selected students will begin employment with Outagamie County on Monday, May 8th 2023. Orientation will be as follows:

May 8th, 2023 (Monday) Orientation at Outagamie County Main Campus, 320 S. Walnut Street Appleton (8:00am-11:30am).

May 10th, 2023- (Wednesday) Brewster Village Orientation - 3300 W. Brewster Street (8:00am-4:30pm)

Selected students will be hired into benefit-eligible positions (20 or more hours per week) and begin their training with a Registered Nurse Instructor. You will be a member of a learning group in a fun, hands-on setting. Training takes place over about four weeks and consists of time in the Learning Lab at Fox Valley Technical College, Clinical Experience at Brewster Village, and online independent study. Hours for training include both the day and evening shifts. This training qualifies you to take both the skills and knowledge tests required for placement on Wisconsin's Nurse Aide Registry.

What will you do after completing the course?

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), under the general supervision of the RN, LPN and/or Neighborhood Manager, functions as an integral member of the household wellness team. They plan and support person-directed living according to nursing orders, care plans and villager choice. Their focus is both on the medical and social needs of each villager maximizing quality of life. Upon successful completion of the Program AND Receipt of your CNA Certification you will work a minimum of 20 hours per week (50%) up to a Maximum of Full-time at Brewster Village.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are most critical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Supports person-directed living through providing villager care while utilizing care plans, nursing orders, and villager choice.
  • Provides villager care and assistance with daily routines (to include assistance and support with personal hygiene, mobility, and eating, as needed and identified in care plans) while maintaining each individuals highest level of function.
  • Encourages villagers to maintain their identity, independence, and effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Promotes, attends and participates in life enrichment. Seeks villager input on life enrichment based on villager choice which provides meaningful ways to spend time such as recreation, exercise, relationship building, and fun.
  • Attends neighborhood and household meetings (i.e., household council meetings, community circles, huddles) and care conferences.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable, and functional environment by assessing the household for potential hazards, implements practices utilizing appropriate techniques regarding sanitation, infection control, fire safety, disaster preparedness and emergency care.
  • Promotes empowerment of the team in providing person-directed living by providing leadership and vision to the household and serving as a role model. Participates in team problem solving.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement and that appropriate follow up is taken to assure quality outcomes.
  • Participates on quality assurance/performance improvement committees as delegated.
  • Successfully completes a minimum of 12 hours of in-service per year and additional education as required.

Education/Certifications/Experience Requirements

  • Current listing on State of Wisconsin Nursing Assistant Registry or completion of a nurse aide training and competency evaluation program during the first four months of employment required.
  • This position does require successful completion of a Post Offer Pre Employment Examination (POPE).
  • Graduate from high school or G.E.D

Required or Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing care, mental illness, developmental disabilities, geriatrics.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to adhere to goals, policies, and procedures of the Department, Brewster Village and the Outagamie County Work Rules and Terms of Employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with appropriate safety regulations.
  • Ability to use and interpret thermometers, sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes and other basic medical equipment.
  • Ability to work semi-independently making sound decisions using good judgment.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance. Work overtime / extra hours as necessary to support Brewster Village.
  • Ability to organize and schedule work cooperatively and effectively with co-workers.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position as specified below in the Essential Physical Demands Section and understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
  • Ability to communicate with villagers, co-workers, and general public clearly and respectfully.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the particular challenges villagers face in terms of communicating their needs and preferences.
