Overview

In the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery, we provide critical, life-saving newborn care. We are a level IV NICU with 53 licensed beds. We are the referral center for the region, caring for the most acutely ill and vulnerable patients. From the smallest premature newborns with complicated heart disease, we care for babies with every neonatal condition.

Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital (LCH) has taken the community to another level of service in order to provide care for the growing population of children in our region. At 247 beds, LCH is the largest children’s hospital between Atlanta and Washington DC. It serves high patient acuity as the flagship children’s hospital within the innovative Atrium Health and offers a full complement of over 125 pediatric subspecialists in over 25 different pediatric specialties. There are 4 pediatric hospitalist teams, a 20-bed PICU (including Cardiac ICU), an 85-bed NICU, and an inpatient pediatric rehabilitation facility. Levine Children’s also has the region’s first 24/7 emergency room just for kids, staffed by doctors trained in pediatric emergency medicine. LCH has repeatedly been ranked among the “Best Children’s Hospitals” in the nation by US News & World Report.

Job Summary

Provides nutrition services and directly supervises nutrition teammates and assists manager in coordination of daily operations. Participates in and leads nutrition -related quality assurance and improvement projects and initiatives. Ensures patient/client satisfaction and regulatory agency compliance are achieved through safe and efficient use of resources.

Essential Functions:

  • Assesses and monitors nutritional status of patients/clients and adjusts nutritional care as indicated utilizing current scientific literature on methodology and relates this information to medical status, anthropometric data, clinical assessment, and dietary evaluation of the patient/client.
  • Provides medical nutrition therapy (MNT)/counseling including assessment and education, developing, monitoring, and implementing MNT/counseling for patients/clients in assigned areas.
  • May write medical nutrition therapy orders per hospital by-laws.
  • Communicates with physicians, nurses, and others to coordinate nutrition into a total patient/client therapy program.
  • Completes all required documentation including nutritional care plan, assessments, consultations, nutrient intake analysis, and patient/client education in the patient’s medical record and on all required documentation tools in a timely, professional, and thorough manner.
  • Teaches and disseminates results and findings of nutrition research to medical team members, nursing, pharmacy, patients, and public.
  • Coordinates hiring, coaching, training, and development, of assigned nutrition teammates, including ongoing review of clinical competencies.
  • Works with management to communicate facility, department, and system information and updates through staff meetings, written memos, and group presentations.
  • Contributes to the dietetic internship program, which may include serving in the role of preceptor and/or coordination of on boarding and scheduling of clinical rotation.
  • Participates in meetings where departmental goals are established or where performance improvement projects are developed

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to give and receive verbal communications on a continuous basis. Must be able to read written communications on a continuous basis both hard copy and on a computer screen. Able to compose written communications frequently. Able to lift and carry objects weighing 25 pounds or less occasionally. Able to perform motor skills as reaching out/up. Frequent periods of walking, standing, sitting. Infrequently squatting, twisting, and bending.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Bachelor’s degree required and at least 3 years clinical experience. Master’s degree preferred. Registered Dietitian (by the Commission on Dietetic Registration) required. Licensed by the North Carolina Board of Dietetics (or affiliated state board as applicable) required OR within 3 months of employment. Previous experience and demonstration of leadership skills preferred. Department managers determine requirements for specialty certifications relevant to the position and the timeframe required to obtain.
