General Summary:

Responsible for overseeing and coordinating laboratory personnel. Routinely function as a Medical Technologist performing test procedures to produce accurate,

precise, and timely patient test results for the diagnosis and management of

human illness. The technologist is required to use specific scientific knowledge,

judgment and understanding of complicated manual procedures and automated

instrumentation to obtain these results. As well as making sure to complete all CAP regulatory requirements throughout the year.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.


  • Demonstrates competence in providing care and services to patients based on the patient's age-specific and/or functional needs.


  • All employees shall abide by the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations, which help protect the privacy, security, & confidentiality of patient health information.


  • Responsible for ensuring that personal performance reflects the Mission, Vision and Service Pride Standards.


  • Collects blood and other specimens from patients by following established protocols.


  • Independently performs complex analysis of all blood, body fluid, and other specimens.


  • Determines reliability of all analytic data before it can be released as a patient result.


  • Requires the ability to interpret information based on judgmental decisions from technical procedures and instruments.


  • Requires in-depth knowledge of medical correlation of data; interrelationships between laboratory parameters; physiologic factors affecting data; and the effect of numerous medications and medical treatment on data.


  • Performs quality control checks on each procedure, on reagents, stains, equipment, etc.


  • Assists in the laboratory Quality Assurance program which evaluates the quality of service to all patients.


  • The technologist assists in the designing and implementing of new methodologies. Also, performs evaluations and comparison studies to facilitate implementation of these methodologies.


  • The technologist provides diagnostic information to physicians and nursing personnel regarding the interpretation of patient results determined by laboratory analysis.


  • The technologist may respond to and handle problems that may occur such as instrument failures, unusual patient data, communication with other departments, the ordering of necessary supplies, and other special duties as may be assigned.


  • Assists in the training of students and new employees in clinical laboratory procedures.


  • Completes competency checklists applicable to the duties being performed on an annual basis.


  • Performs competency assessment checklists for other Laboratory staff.


  • Coordinates daily activities and personnel.


  • Contributes to the personal and professional growth of others through feedback, coaching, and support.


  • Actively supports the Laboratory Manager to fulfill strategic departmental goals and objectives. Actively assists improving quality of services, while reducing overall costs of services.


  • Assists the Laboratory Manager as needed with reviews and updates existing policies and procedures and writes new procedures as needed.


  • Attends various meetings as scheduled


  • Assists with preparation of a variety of reports, analysis and summaries.


  • Assists the Laboratory Manager as needed in checking inventory, stock, and order supplies as needed.


  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Job Scope:


  • Reports to Laboratory Manager.


  • This job supervises other Laboratory employees.


  • Must be free of all unlawful substances and alcohol.


  • Must keep current CAP knowledge up to date with current standards yearly, while performing essential duties listed above.


  • Must have current ASCP or AMT certification at all times while in this position.

Education, Certification and/or Experience
:

Registered Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist with ASCP or AMT.

3 years of supervisory experience preferred, minimum of 3 years work experience as a generalist required. Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree required. A copy of college or university transcript must be received within 60 days of employment. CPR certification required.


Language Skills
:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.


Mathematical Skills
:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry and statistics.


Reasoning Ability
:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
