Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC salary scales set the minimum pay based on the individuals Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. See the salary scale titled, Postdoctoral Scholar-Employee /Postdoctoral Scholar-Fellow / Postdoctoral Scholar-Paid Direct -Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $60,000 - $71,952.

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as May 1, 2023, but candidate must be able to begin no later than June 1, 2023. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.

Position duration: Maximum Duration of Service in a Postdoctoral Title Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of two years, with the possibility of reappointment. The total duration of an individuals postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution.

Position Description


The Department of Ocean Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar to join a small, friendly team studying the biogeochemistry of mercury in Greenland fjords, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and United States Geological Survey. Under the direction of UCSC Professor Carl Lamborg, the postdoctoral scholar will perform sea-going fieldwork, collect water and biological material samples, process and analyze samples for various parameters, design and implement mercury transformation rate experiments, and collect, analyze and interpret environmental DNA. Land-based sampling may also be required. The postdoctoral researcher will also be expected to contribute to manuscripts submitted for publication in academic journals.

Applicants with expertise in both environmental mercury and genomics in the marine environment, as well as metagenomics of environmental samples, are strongly encouraged to apply.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidates must have (or be able to readily obtain) a current passport and be able to travel to Greenland.
  • Selected candidates will work in remote locations for prolonged periods (approximately one to two months) and must be able to adapt to a flexible and demanding field schedule.
  • Fieldwork may require camping as well as working in the early morning hours and in cold and adverse weather conditions.
  • Selected candidates must be physically capable of carrying 30 pounds of equipment, hike in snowy or rocky terrain, and be able to bend and kneel for long periods of time in the field.
  • Selected candidates must be able to work in small teams on small and large vessels.
  • Selected candidates must be able to use microscopes and computers for extended periods of time.

Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in earth, environmental or ocean science, or a related field.
