The Division of Pathology within the Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University is currently seeking a full time Medical Technologist I or II to join our Clinical Pathology Laboratory. Our laboratory is one of four units that provides support for all aspects of diagnostic pathology: Anatomic Pathology (includes Necropsy/Gross Pathology, Histology, and Molecular Pathology Laboratory), Clinical Pathology, Biological Material Procurement and Biological Material Shipping.


The Clinical Pathology Laboratory (CPL) offers high quality, diagnostic laboratory testing support for experimental (study related) and clinical (animal wellness) requests. CPL technical staff are dedicated professionals and accomplished experts possessing certification through the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and/or American Medical Technologists (AMT).


Laboratory testing is performed following strict quality assurance practices to ensure accurate, high quality data delivery. Instrumentation used within the lab is up to date and maintained under current vendor service agreements to ensure optimal performance. Compliance with internal and external quality control practices ensure reliable, accurate resulting. Services offered include hematology, chemistry, parasitology, fluid analysis, microbiology, and general processing.

The Medical Technologist I or II will be a team player who is willing to learn on the job and collaborate with lab members and center members. The Medical Technologist I or II will work to ensure the highest quality of laboratory research support, and has good communication skills with co-workers, the management team, PI’s, research staff, students, and other support services.


The position level of Medical Technologist (I or II) offered to the selected finalist will be determined by the minimum qualifications for each position as well as experience and training in the related job skills outlined below for each position and preferred qualifications for both positions.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Medical Technologist I:

  • Performs standardized and semi-routine biological, chemical, hematological, immunological, immune-hematological, microbiological, and serological tests in a research or clinical laboratory.
  • May perform tests in one scientific discipline or perform selected tests in multiple disciplines.

Medical Technologist II:

  • Performs standardized and moderately complex biological, chemical, hematological, immunological, immune-hematological, microbiological, and serological tests in a research or clinical laboratory.
  • May perform tests in one scientific discipline or perform selected tests in multiple disciplines.
  • Provides guidance to lower level technologists.

Both:

  • Assists in staff/student education by demonstrating procedures and participating in their orientation and training.
  • Ensures the collection of acceptable specimens; may perform venipuncture.
  • Evaluates the validity of test results and confirms results by alternative methods.
  • Maintains accurate and complete documentation of patient information, equipment and test results to comply with regulations.
  • Ensures scheduled tests have been completed.
  • May perform independent research activities and assist in the development of new procedures.
  • Calibrates, performs preventive maintenance, and troubleshoots equipment and instrument malfunctions.
  • Monitors laboratory supply levels and assists in reordering and inventorying supplies.
  • Complies with all relevant safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Medical Technologist I:

  • A bachelor's degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical or biological science.
  • Certification or eligible for certification by one of the following accreditation agencies: MT (ASCP), or categorical, MT (HEW), MT (HHS), MT (AMT), MT (NCA), CHT (ABHI). Letter of eligibility from agency must be confirmed prior to employment. Certification must be obtained within 18 months of cumulative employment as a medical technologist in the state of Georgia.

Medical Technologist II:

  • A bachelor's degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical, or biological science.
  • Certification by one of the following accreditation agencies: MT (ASCP), or categorical MT (HEW), MT (HHS), MT (AMT), MT (NCA), CHT (ABHI).
  • Two years of medical technology experience.
  • The bachelor's degree requirement may be waived for a medical technologist who was ASCP certified in the years prior to the bachelor's degree requirement by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists and a HEW/HHS technologist certified by Health and Human Services.

PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experienced in microbiology applications.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work environment involves working with biohazardous blood and tissues.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical laboratory environment.
  • Requires the ability to bend, kneel, and/or squat.
