Medical Interpreter – Spanish and Portuguese

CLASSIFICATION/STATUS: Non-Exempt, Part Time/32 hours per week

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Manager of Community Health Outreach and Health Benefits

Pay Range: $18 - 25/hour

YOUR ROLE & IMPACT

As part of the dynamic team at Charles River Community Health (CRCH), a healthcare practice providing integrated and compassionate care to underserved communities, the Medical Interpreter – Spanish and Portuguese will provide medical interpretation in Spanish and Portuguese for the Health Center, and relay medical information between patients and staff particularly relating to patient confidentiality.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide interpretation assistance one-on-one and via the onsite phone interpretation system to medical providers triage, front desk, and other health center staff who request assistance in communicating with patients regarding particular patient needs.
  • Review provider schedules and prepare a daily anticipated schedule of one-on-one interpretation services.
  • Provide written translation of patient-related materials into Spanish and Portuguese.
  • Serve as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and providers to contribute successful outcomes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of cultural medical practices and communicate same to Health Center staff.
  • Prepare encounter form upon completion of translation service with each patient.
  • Adhere to patient confidentiality policies and practices consistent with medical interpretation guidelines.
  • Work collaboratively with other Health Center staff in meeting JCAHO accreditation and other regulatory and/or funding requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical staff, financial counselors, and registration staff.
  • Participate in all mandatory trainings and maintain knowledge of medical interpretation terms and practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Manager of Community Health Outreach and Health Benefits, or designee.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES, TRAITS

  • Minimum of Associates Degree, Bachelor's Degree related field required.
  • Must have proof of completing a minimum of 40 hours of medical interpretation training.
  • At least 1 year of experience working within a healthcare setting as a Medical Interpreter required.
  • Trilingual in English, Spanish, and Portuguese strongly required.
  • Must have knowledge of computer systems such as Word and Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills required.
  • Must have a willingness to work flexible hours to meet the organization's needs/demands. Must be able to work Fridays, as well as one evening and/or Saturday every week (otherwise, there is some flexibility with the schedule).
  • Must be able to work onsite in our Brighton and Waltham locations as needed.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, particularly with people from diverse cultures, with the ability to understand the community, population, and patients we serve.
  • Must have experience in diverse cultures, with strong commitment to promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and reducing inequities.
  • Must believe in the work we do at CRCH, with a strong passion to serve underserved populations in diverse settings.
