POSITION OVERVIEW

The Mechanical Engineer will report directly to the Mechanical Engineering Group lead and have responsibility for completing mechanical designs in a Lean manufacturing environment. Contributes mechanical engineering expertise to new product development, product sustaining and other strategic business projects. Applies Lean principles to recognize waste in the engineering and manufacturing realm and implements changes to mitigate or eliminate waste. This position focuses on product quality and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities of the Mechanical Engineer will include:

  • Develop and prepare 3D models using Inventor, utilizing resilient modelling strategy and best practices for documentation within and external to AutoDesk Vault Professional.
  • Prepare detailed component drawings for in-house assembly and vendor fabrication.
  • Prepare assembly drawings and work instructions for production.
  • Provide trouble-shooting and technical evaluation of existing, new, and custom products.
  • Process and maintain engineering change orders, part number requests, and bills of material.
  • Develop test plans to qualify designs, proof of concept, and final products.
  • Supply technical support to upper management in strategic decisions.
  • Interface with vendors/suppliers to fulfill parts requirements.
  • Maintain electronic drawing files, specifications, and other reference materials.
  • Interface with manufacturing, quality, sales, marketing, procurement, service, materials control, and other cross-functional teams as required.
  • Operate in accordance with ISO procedures and lean manufacturing practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATION AND REQUIREMENTS

Well-qualified candidates will possess the following skills, experience, and traits:

Minimum Background and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or similar engineering discipline
  • 4+ years related mechanical engineering experience outside of university study
  • Experience in designing and troubleshooting mechanical systems involving pneumatics or packaged electronics.
  • Experience with solid modeling, managing assemblies and detailed drawings using Autodesk Inventor or similar, such as: SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software
  • Understanding of GD&T, FEA and tolerance analysis
  • Demonstrated hands-on approach to prototype design and assembly
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate effectively and collaboratively with all levels of colleagues and customers
  • Ability to demonstrate high-degree of initiative and work effectively in a flexible and changing work environment, both independently and within teams
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 3-4 times/year for approximately one week intervals

Additional Background and Skills Preferred:

  • Experience in Design for Manufacturability and Design for Assembly
  • Understanding of a variety of fabrication methods including, but not limited to, welding, machining, casting, injection molding, additive manufacturing, cable assembly, and stamping,
  • Experience in Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma principles, including a general understanding of analysis of measurement systems (e.g., Gage R&R, Uncertainty Ratios)
  • General understanding of regulatory standards, including NFPA (NEC), CSA, FCC, and CE
