Company was founded in 1985 specializing in custom automation, robotics, and processes for the post forming & molding industry, as well as General Industry. Applications include robotics for fastening, dispensing, material handling, welding, and general assembly; as well as secondary tooling for composite molded assemblies, pierce dies, bonding, drilling, fastening, checking, and inspection. We are in a high-growth industry and located in a single 54,000 SF plant in Temperance, MI.

Position Summary

Mechanical Engineering using Solidworks to design, detail (machined details), & layout of multiple concurrent OEM and Tier 1 custom automation & robotics projects. Scope of work will encompass from Project kick-off through the final Design Release phase. Leverage existing concepts and designs from our Solidworks library or customer provided concepts and manufacturing drawings.

Assignments/Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for all phases of the Mechanical Engineering phase of the project including: Concept, Final Design, customer design reviews and approvals, detailing, checking, Robot risk assessment, sequence of operations, BOM creation, and release.
  • Lead assigned projects successfully through all design, engineering phases and support operations with mechanical build issues, as required.
  • Serve as the secondary point of contact to the customer from project kick-off through final Design Approval, as well as the internal point of contact for the design phase of projects assigned. Project Manager will be the Primary point of customer contact.
  • Project Status reporting internally to ensure assigned projects are tracking on-time and budget to the baseline mechanical scope.
  • Accurate weekly tracking and reporting of Percent of Completion (POC) for Labor & Material of Mechanical scope or work.
  • Collaborate with the PM and cross functionally to create ECR’s when scope changes are requested by the customer, estimate change in mechanical labor & material costs, and support the PM in successfully negotiating all scope changes, while maintaining customer satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders, Project Manager, and teams in Engineering, Operations and Purchasing to drive successful Project Execution.
  • Utilize existing Project Management Dept. tools including Gantt Charts for schedule management & communication, ECR’s for Change Management both internally & externally, Risk management, Open Issues lists, Meeting Minutes, Project Status reports, and Phase Gate process documentation.
  • Key success factors: Project performance to baseline scope, schedule, and budget within the Mechanical functional area.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, Licenses, Certifications:

  • 5+ years of Solidworks mechanical design of industrial automation, robotics, integration, or custom manufactured solutions.
  • Basic Autocad and/or DraftSight competency.
  • 2-year Technical degree, Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or 5+ years’ experience in automation/machinery or related field. Preferably mechanical or electrical disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of how to calculate mechanical requirements: structures, cylinders, motors, and loads.
  • Ability to read and interpret customer part prints including GD&T.
  • Understanding part/tooling locating methods using 2- & 4-way locators, net pads, and shim adjustments.
  • Experience in weldment design.
  • Experience in design for manufacturability.
  • Prior tool & die design experience a big plus.
  • Willingness to collaborate with machine builders and machinists to optimize designs.
  • Very strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • High Emotional Intelligence and interpersonal skills
  • Technical aptitude and ability to quickly learn and adapt.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites within N. America 10% of the time.
  • Must have the current and continuing right to work in the United States of America without sponsorship.
