Description

Performs a variety of duties that are commensurate with the complexity and skill set required of a journeyman to advanced level technician. The distinguishing characteristics of the classification include responsibility for performing repairs and any kind of preventative maintenance inspections and servicing vehicles and fleet related equipment. Work is performed under minor supervision and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness. Performs skilled repair and maintenance on a variety of gasoline, and diesel-powered equipment and their various systems and components such as: engines and power plant; drive train; brakes; steering and suspension; electrical, air conditioning; etc.

Salary Range $24.25 - $37.59

  • Diagnoses, repairs, and/or replaces defective parts; repairs consist of, but are not limited to, engine overhaul, repair/replacement of heavy-duty trucks, automotive, and heavy equipment brakes, transmissions, clutches, motor parts, electrical/electronic systems, air conditioning and heating systems, hydraulic systems, gear boxes, belts, gaskets, etc.
  • Services and performs maintenance such as greasing, lubricating, and cleaning of tools and equipment; checks and changes fluids, spark plugs; services batteries, replace and/or adjust headlights, windshield wipers, tires, turn signals, vehicle fluids, blades, etc.
  • Performs light welding as required.
  • May be required to construct/rebuild parts by hand or machine, remove and repair/replace or paint equipment or vehicle body parts.
  • Maintains work area and shop in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Operates City vehicle to pick-up parts and supplies from vendors, to road test vehicles repaired, or to make service calls.
  • Operates power tools and equipment to perform repairs such as pneumatic wrenches, machine tools, (lathes, grinding machines) welding and flame cutting equipment, jacks, cranes, hoists, etc.
  • Maintains logs of repairs performed on each vehicle.
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education and other appropriate learning programs.
  • Provides consultation and assistance regarding specific matters within identified area of expertise.
  • Operates word processor, computer terminal, photocopier, facsimile machine, and other office equipment if required.
  • May repair small engines and equipment.
  • May assign/oversee work and train lower level mechanics in assigned area; ensure safety procedures are followed; ensure parts and equipment are available to complete work assignments.
  • May be responsible for maintenance of records; obtaining estimates and appraisals; requisition and control of materials, tools, and parts; schedule and coordination of outside repairs; review and authorization of invoices, and preparation of status reports, work orders, equipment inventory reports, and other reports as needed.
  • May assist with emergency calls and repairs.
  • May maintain and repair specialized emergency equipment.
  • Performs all other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma (or equivalent) or completion of a vocational training program in the area of automotive or heavy equipment mechanics (minimum of 1,080 clock hours).
At least a minimum of two (2) years of experience in vehicle and equipment repair, service and/or maintenance.
Maintain a Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or must obtain within 6 months of employment. Failure to obtain a valid class B commercial driver’s license will result in failure to pass the 6-month probationary period and termination.

Additional Qualifications
Must possess a minimum of 4 ASE certifications at time of hire or must obtain all required outstanding certifications (from the list below) prior to the end of the 6-month probationary period. All ASE certifications must remain valid throughout the duration of employment. Automotive and Light Truck (4): A4- Steering and Suspension, A5- Brakes, A6- Electrical Systems, A7- Heating and Air Conditioning. Medium-Heavy Duty Truck (5): T4- Brakes, T5- Suspension and Steering, T6- Electrical Systems., T7- Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, T8- Preventative Maintenance Inspection. Failure to obtain the required ASE certifications will result in failure to pass the 6-month probationary period and termination.
Must possess tool cabinet, hand tools, air tools, basic electronic testing equipment and other necessary tools to perform duties expected of this level of a professional automotive technician.

Skills, Work Environment and Hours

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of heavy-duty truck engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, brakes, air conditioning and heating, transmissions and hydraulics.
  • Knowledge of the operation and use of related equipment and tools, mechanic's tools, lubrication and fluid service equipment, drill press, fork lift, hydraulic press, battery tester, and pressure washer.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as safety regulations, work orders, equipment maintenance and repair manuals, and diagrams and schematics.
  • Ability to perform basic automotive related math.
  • Ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgement to adapt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
  • Ability to perform advanced level diagnostic procedures.
  • Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluations of information and interpretation of data.
  • Ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of color odor to determine condition of fluids, shapes to distinguish objects clearly, and textures to detect wear.
  • Ability to hear with understanding instructions or information in personal conversations in a garage working environment. Sufficient hearing to detect sounds to determine if equipment is operating correctly and track down malfunctions such as air leaks.

Physical Demands
The physical demands involve balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, depth perception, driving, far acuity, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, near acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, seeing, standing, stooping, talking, and walking. May be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment
The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperamental changes (i.e. warehouses, covered loading docks, garages, etc.). The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: no effective protection from the weather. The worker is subject to extreme heat: temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. The worker is subject to noise: there is sufficient noise to cause the workers to shout in order to be heard above the surrounding noise level. The worker is subject to hazards: includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places or exposure to chemicals. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases or poor ventilation. The worker is subject to oils: there is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids. The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires them to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, work and or shift hours, and needs of the department.

Hours of Work: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm (occasional weekends and holidays as needed)
