Equipment Operator for the Martin County Highway Department, responsible for maintaining highways, municipal and rural roads, and right of ways.

Duties:

Operates dump trucks for purpose of hauling a variety of materials such as paving mix/asphalt, stone, sand/salt, dirt etc.…

Operates trucks/snow plows to maintain County roads in good traveling and safe condition.

Operates a variety of trucks, heavy equipment, and machinery.

Shovels a variety of materials as needed and/or assigned for duties such as, road patching, repairing washouts, putting in culverts and cleaning spills.

Removes a clears debris in ditches, by cutting and removing brush, tree limbs/trees and mowing.

Checks and maintains vehicles daily and reports problems or unsafe issues to Supervisor.

Completes daily logs on trucks, and equipment used and job locations.

Serves on 24-hour call for emergency situations as assigned.

Skills and Knowledge:

High School Diploma or GED.

Must be 18 years of age.

Ability to meet all County hiring requirements, including passage of a medical exam and a drug test.

Working knowledge of assigned Department heavy equipment/trucks and ability to safely load and haul materials, clear winter roads and complete related maintenance and safety measures.

Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computer, telephone, and CB Radio.

Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations and read/interpret detailed prints, sketches, layouts, specifications and maps.

Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, department information and records according to State requirements.

Ability to operate hand and/or power tools such as a hammer, screw driver, wrenches, drills, power saws, air nozzle, air compressor, ratchet, calipers, files, mop, broom and gauges.

Ability to compare or observe similarities and differences between data, people, or things.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace and personal conduct.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.

Possession of a valid driver’s license and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with required endorsements and a demonstrated safe driving record.
