Job Summary

:
Serves as a manager and ‘working’ supervisor for the CAPS Student Success Advisor team—both supervising the daily operations of a team of advisors, and also holding primary advising responsibilities for a specified group of students in both curricular and co-curricular domains. Provides management and direction to the team for the purpose of supporting CAPS learners’ overall success through the completion of their academic program.

Responsibilities

:
  • Provides team leadership that promotes a model of relationship-based advising informed by the unique qualities and needs of an adult Christian liberal arts learning environment. Supervises daily workflow and performance of a team of Student Success Advisors, in adherence to established team metrics and goals related to student success, achievement and retention. Serves as second tier of escalation and support for matters of learner concern. Connects high at-risk or in-crisis students with Associate Dean and other appropriate staff and provides well-researched recommendations to ensure appropriate support.
  • Maintains a personal academic advising load, serving in the capacity of Student Success Advisor to students within a specified group of degree programs. This includes but is not limited to providing advice related to transfer of credits, course prerequisites and corequisites, academic policies, and academic progress/academic standing. Advises CAPS/SEM/GS staff and administration on academic policy through service to Admissions office, on academic teams, and within committees as assigned. Implements and monitors a system of review for academic records to ensure that students fulfill academic requirements for graduation. Builds and maintains personal relationships with new, continuing, and reentering students to advise them in ways that help them reach their individual goals, and supervises this work as done by others.
  • Provides support as requested to the PSEO and Early College advising unit. Support may include general advising to assist students in determining a major that would best fit their current and future academic needs by providing connections to faculty for exploration. Advising may include assisting students with course selection to meet their high school requirements including general education and degree specific course planning. Maintain a strong partnership with CAS Admissions and the CAS Registrar’s staff to provide the best student care experience.
  • Leads daily retention responsibilities within their advising team, including routine compilation and organization of retention data to ensure accurate measures of success and retention, with a key emphasis on consistent reporting of this information to CAPS/SEM/GS leadership on both an ad hoc and per-term-basis. Additionally, leads Student Success Advisors in the implementation and ongoing adherence to tactical, consistent, data-driven proactive and reactive retention and success strategies as developed by the Student Success Managers and Associate Dean. Provide timely interventions and resolution to retention concerns, and supervise this work as done by others. Collaborates with the Associate Registrar for CAPS/SEM/GS and associated staff to administer academic policy, as well as organize and maintain accurate student records. Works collaboratively with registrar staff, faculty and commencement personnel to ensure accurate listing for commencement participation.
  • Serves as back-up support to other Student Success Advisors (as assigned) and works in conjunction with team to ensure adequate support for students.
  • Assists with Orientation and Commencement planning/execution.
  • Other duties as assigned, including some classroom site supervision tasks.

:
  • A successful candidate will have a proven track record of quality leadership in an academic setting, demonstrated talent in human relations and conflict management, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Must be able to perform the duties of the position in a professional and confidential manner. Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment is essential.
  • Must have the ability to think critically and act independently, and promote and develop this ability in others. Outstanding customer service skills, with the ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment, are essential.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning theory and educational systems and the ability to transfer this knowledge to others is essential.
  • Knowledge in word processing (preferably Microsoft Word), spreadsheet, and database experience required. Position requires ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, dealing with frequent interruptions, and turn over a high volume of inquiries.

Required Experience

:
4+ years of related experience. Prior experience in a direct management and leadership role within an academic setting is strongly preferred.

Required Education

:
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in student affairs, professional development, or a related human relations field strongly preferred.

Additional Information

:
Position requires flexibility for occasional evening and weekend hours, and occasional travel for local meetings.
