Manager, Database Operations

Position Overview

Cast & Crew builds and advances software that is used by many of Hollywood's largest and most elite film, television, and commercial production companies. We are looking for a highly experienced, forward thinking hands-on database manager to enhance the performance of our organization's database operations. This role is responsible for creating and implementing standardized database management procedures, and the installation, security, migration and upgrading of our databases.

To ensure success as a database manager, you must possess extensive knowledge of database architecture and experience in a 24/7 customer facing enterprise organization. An outstanding candidate will be someone whose database management expertise translates into optimal database performance.

primary focus will be to manage and maintain our database applications environment including Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Mongo for our core applications. The role will also design, lead and perform migration efforts to new technologies such as PostgreSQL as well as manage and maintain our global Mongo, SQL Server and MySQL-based applications on-prem and in the cloud both in the US and our India operations.

Core Responsibilities

  • Support patching cycles for Infrastructure and Oracle CPU patching.
  • Proactively monitor the health of enterprise databases – coordinate and make changes as needed.
  • Database backups, restores, and refreshes.
  • Strong SQL experience, writing and tuning queries based on application requirements.
  • Participate on development teams providing advice on design and tuning of database objects, queries, and overall data architecture.
  • Use of tools and utilities to load and unload data, generate and edit test data.
  • Working knowledge of PL/SQL (designing, developing, and maintaining stored procedures, triggers, and user-defined functions).
  • Work with the various technology and business teams to ensure that the associated hardware resources are allocated to the databases and to ensure high availability and optimum performance.
  • Provide trend analysis to the operations team to enable them to make informed decisions regarding resource management.
  • Provide query and performance expertise in support of code development.
  • Monitor long running transactions and can optimize query executions.
  • Problem escalation to development team and third parties as appropriate.
  • Implementation and release of database changes as submitted by the development team.
  • Documenting technical environments and processes.
  • Develop procedures to ensure data integrity and quality and perform regular audits to ensure data integrity and quality.
  • The position will be part of the on-call rotation and will be expected to respond to critical support issues during non-business hours.
  • Manage Database support relationship.
  • Conduct diagnostic tests and evaluate performance metrics.
  • Prepare and present system performance reports to senior management.
  • Work to control database technology costs throughout the enterprise.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Key Qualifications

  • BCS degree or related field, or equivalent work experience required.
  • Advanced proficiency in Structured Query Language (SQL).
  • Advanced analytical, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • In-depth hands-on knowledge of database technologies, architecture, and data security.
  • Knowledge of best practices in database management.
  • Enhance the scalability and performance of existing database architecture.
  • Ability to develop database structures and features according to organizational needs.
  • Prior experience hiring, supervising, and/or mentoring database development teams.
  • Adept at data protection by developing data security and restoration policies, procedures, and controls in association with and under the guidance of our ISO.
  • Experience with database maintenance, migration, and software.
  • Experience documenting processes and complying with best practices in database management.
  • Keep up to date with developments and trends in database management.
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to foster and build working relation with all IT colleagues, users, department and executive management, and clients.
  • Must be a self-starter – demonstrates strong follow-up and follow-through ensuring timely completion of resolving technical issues, tasks, and avoid delays in delivery of work product.
  • Demonstrates a continually growing knowledge of Company's internal business practices, processes, and the daily IT operational needs of the users.
  • Proven ability to effectively document processes, procedures, workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extremely strong Oracle and Postgres database experience, including RDBMS architectures, backups, security, and high availability – minimum 10 years preferred.

Special Work Conditions

  • Sedentary – Involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Some positions may entail exerting up to 15 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, or pull.

The compensation for this position is $150k-$185k per year. Compensation is commensurate with various factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, qualifications, skills, training, licensure, certifications, geographic cost of labor, and other business and organizational needs. Compensation range for candidates in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location.
