GENERAL PURPOSE

Maintenance Worker
Under supervision, learn and perform unskilled and semi-skilled work in support of the maintenance, construction and repair of City parks; to operate a variety of maintenance and repair tools and equipment; perform a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility; perform other duties as assigned.

Incumbents with basic maintenance or construction experience will learn the City's infrastructure, systems, facilities, proper use of tools and equipment, and assist and participate in all activities in the area of work; as experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence; positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the Maintenance Worker I level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods; assignments may vary with the skill and training of the incumbent; however, all employees are cross-trained in all assignments and the use of all equipment.

Maintenance Worker I
Under supervision, to perform routine manual skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, construction and repair of City parks, grounds, beaches, beach maintenance parks and related areas, streets, buildings, facilities, and graffiti; to operate a variety of maintenance and repair tools and equipment; perform a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility; perform other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintenance Worker

Perform unskilled and semi-skilled construction and maintenance work involving the land, facilities and equipment of the City; operate hand and portable power tools pertaining to the assignment; may drive or operate tractors, backhoes, front end loaders, trucks, vacuums, vactors, cutters and other motor driven equipment; may maintain and sharpen tools used in the assignment; may work independently or with a crew in the maintenance of an assigned area or project; work at heights using ground ladders and mechanical lifts, work below ground level in trenches and excavations; use chemicals and other supplies, some of which may be noxious or harmful to the body; wear protective clothing and equipment; may secure worksites from traffic hazards as necessary; maintain simple records; communicate by cell phone and email; read and interpret memoranda and construction drawings; operate city vehicles on public streets; may perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; fuel and lubricate vehicles and related equipment; may request materials or equipment needed and maintain work records; adhere to safety practices and wear personal protective equipment; will be subject to emergency call-out work and to assist other departments as needed; may be required to work over-time; may be subject to call-back on weekends, after hours, and holidays; assist with the set up and take down of City sponsored events and functions; set up and break down chairs and tables in conference rooms; assemble and move furniture; build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

Perform a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work of grounds, gardening and turf maintenance duties involved in the development, maintenance, and repair of landscaped areas, parks, playgrounds, open spaces, and public facilities; perform routine maintenance duties such as mowing and edging grass, operating a weed eater, blowing leaves on sidewalks and parking lots, removing and trimming shrubbery, raking leaves and debris, and removing graffiti/vandalism; perform or assist in a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems; adjust and maintain timers and controllers; repair or assist with the repair of sprinkler heads and lines; locate and repair water breaks; plant, water and maintain landscaped areas consisting of turf, bushes, trees, flowers, and shrubs; trim and prune bushes, trees and shrubs; water, mow, weed, renovate, and fertilize lawns; identify turf, shrub, and tree diseases, parasites and other problems; perform or assist with maintenance and repairs on various equipment including playground equipment, picnic tables, gates, fences, and tree stakes; assist in moving and installing park and recreation equipment such as bleachers, backstops, and playground equipment; perform or assist with routine maintenance and repair activities for park facilities; perform general grounds cleaning; clean and maintain assigned areas; pick up and discard trash and litter; operate and maintain a variety of landscaping equipment including sprayers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, weed eaters and related equipment; operate a variety of hand and small power tools and equipment such as push mowers, riding mowers, shovels, rakes, chainsaws, and other equipment in support of parks maintenance and repair operations; perform all duties in compliance with City and other mandated health and safety rules and regulations; participate in the development and propagation of SOPs (standard operating procedures) including safe work practices and procedures; attend and participate in group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field.

Qualifications

Maintenance Worker

Education
High School Diploma, or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.), plus a minimum of one (1) year of experience in construction, electrical, HVAC, building maintenance or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Training and Experience
At least one (1) year of experience in construction or a closely related field or any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described.

Licensing and Certification Requirements
Possession of or ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid Class “C” California driver’s license with a safe, satisfactory driving record and able to maintain through the course of employment.

Completion of CPR Certification within 12 months of employment and maintain same during employment.

Completion of the Traffic Control & Flagger Training within 12 months of employment.

Possess and maintain a valid California Qualified Applicator Certification category “B” is required. If not possessed at the time of hire, then the ability to commence the process within 12 months of employment and completion within 24 months of employment, and after certification is issued the ability to maintain certification during employment.

Possess and maintain a valid National Recreation and Park Association Playground Safety Certificate is desirable.

Maintenance Worker I

Education

CAFETERIA BENEFIT PLANThe City sponsors an Internal Revenue Code §125 Cafeteria Benefit Plan that offers non-taxable benefits to employees. The City contracts with the CalPERS Group Health Benefits Division, which offers several options including HMOs and PPOs plans.CalPERS offers eleven (11) medical plans within the San Diego County. The cost for each plan varies and so do the co-payments. Effective January 1, 2021, the City will provide a Cafeteria Plan allotment of $1,850 a month for a city provided medical, dental, and vision plans for all employees and their eligible dependents. The employee will pay through payroll deductions any premium Cost in excess of the Cafeteria Plan Allotment. LIFE INSURANCEThe City pays premiums that provide group term life insurance and AD&D in an amount $50,000. Employees may purchase up to $300,000 of additional employee term life insurance. Employees may purchase up to $100,000 of additional term life insurance for their spouses and up to $10,000 per their child. SHORT-TERM & LONG-TERM DISABILITYThe City provides short-term disability insurance equal to 60% of income (up to $1,155/week) after an 8-day waiting period. Under this formula, the employee's highest three-year consecutive months of CalPERS reportable earnings are used to determine the level of retirement benefit.
