The role of Litigation Counsel will be to support the business in civil and/or criminal litigation, either directly or in collaboration with external counsel. While the position is based in Houston with a focus primarily on North America, successful candidates will have familiarity with the legal systems of different countries and a demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic, high-energy, global environment. Reports to the Executive Litigation Counsel for the Americas in Houston.

As Litigation Counsel, you will be responsible for:

  • Representing and supporting the business globally in the resolution and management of disputes and litigation. Responsible for all phases of claims and pre-litigation disputes and litigation (not just passively supervising outside counsel) both individually and as part of a global legal team including, where appropriate, by appearing as counsel of record in arbitration and mediation proceedings.
  • Coordinating and overseeing a diverse litigation portfolio and supervise outside counsel in court proceedings in the Americas.
  • Collaborating closely with fellow Legal Team members and outside counsel to develop and carry out litigation strategy with an eye toward impact on Baker Hughes broader business objectives and associated implications
  • Providing proactive legal advice to the business for the early detection and avoidance of disputes, and improvement of legal and business processes.
  • Organizing and conducting training courses for business colleagues on lessons learned and other legal/litigation topics.
  • Working closely with internal business clients, accounting, risk management, insurance, and outside law firms to effectively manage litigation results and implement cost controls
  • Providing legal counsel and guidance on day-to-day basis to internal business colleagues and stakeholders regarding various legal issues.
  • Assisting with internal reporting, tracking and budgeting of litigated matters.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Be Licensed to practice in one or more US states.
  • Have a minimum of seven (7) years’ legal experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills.
  • Possess superior advocacy skills, including the ability to efficiently communicate in writing and orally, an aptitude for practical negotiation, the capability to think clearly and quickly under pressure, the composure to satisfy multiple and often competing interests, and a good- sense of humor.
  • Have experience as counsel in international arbitration proceedings and familiarity with the arbitration and mediation rules of the ICC and other leading dispute resolution institutions.
  • Be able and willing to travel frequently or, during periods of travel restrictions, to work effectively via remote/virtual means.
  • While not strict requirements, fluency in one or more languages in addition to English, and familiarity with other national legal systems, would be considered a plus.
  • The position is well suited to candidates with an open mind, an appreciation of new experiences and challenges, enthusiasm for business, and a strong curiosity about the world’s cultures, businesses, and legal systems.
