Lead VPK Teacher

Job Description Summary:

The job of Lead VPK Teacher is to provide guidance to the VPK teachers, oversee related learning activities, supervise and teach preschool students developmentally appropriate practices based on the Florida Standards for four-year-olds, ensure compliance with program requirements, and coordinate communications with parents.

Responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Instruct preschool-aged children in activities designed to promote intellectual and creative growth
  • Create a fun and safe learning environment
  • Develop schedules and routines to ensure adequate physical activity, rest, and playtime
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with students and parents
  • Communicate with parents on students' growth and progress
  • Maintain the health and safety of all students
  • Adapts classroom work for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student's achievements; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Facilitates preschool student’s learning (e.g. art, science, music, housekeeping, story time, movement activities, etc.) for the purpose of improving the students’ academic success and transition to elementary school.
  • Models conversation, manners, clean-up activities, listening skills, etc. for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social and interpersonal behavior.
  • Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, nap times, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Organizes age appropriate indoor and outdoor activities for the purpose of ensuring student participation in learning activities.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. assessments, attendance, student records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Supports classroom teachers for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans.

Qualifications: The person selected for this position must be professionally prepared, must meet the requirements of the state licensing agency, and be physically and mentally fit to care for children. These requirements include but may not be limited to the following:

1.Education requirements needs to be in at least two of the following

  • CDA (Child Development Associate) issued by the Council for Professional Recognition with a Completion of the DOE Emergent Literacy Course
  • Or CDAE (Child Development Associate Equivalent) issued by a DCF-approved program with a completion of the DOE Emergent Literacy Course
  • Or AS Degree in Early Childhood Education or higher
  • Or AA Degree with at least 6 credit hours of early childhood education
  • Or Bachelor’s Degree with at least 6 credit hours of early childhood education (preferred)

2. Department of Children and Families Staff Credential

3. Completed the 45 Hour Training through the Department of Children and Families

4. Completed all of the VPK Instructor Emergent Literacy Course Requirements

5. First Aid, CPR, AED certified within 90 days of employment.

6. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds, and be able see, hear, and respond to children’s needs, including reaching high, stooping to the child’s level, sitting on the floor and getting up, and being able to reach a child 20 – 30 feet away within 15 seconds without danger to the staff person’s health. Must be able to stand on feet for long periods of time, at least 70% of the day.

7. Be able to determine cognitive, social, and physical needs of children in written and verbal forms of the English language and at a level that 90-95% of the parents and staff are able to understand and, in turn, respond to.

8. Be able to handle, in a positive way, the demands that contact with many children and parents bring every day. This includes stress, tension, noise, and interpersonal conflicts. Must able to physical and mentally react immediately to unexpected circumstances.

9. Schedule Monday – Friday from 8:30am-3:30pm

Salary: Is hourly based on credentials and experience.
