LEAD AV TECHNICIAN

Job Title: Lead Technician

Class: Regular, Full-Time FLSA

Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Project Manager

General Description:

The Lead Technician will supervise and direct the work of a team of technicians during the installation of audio, video, and lighting integrated systems in commercial venues, houses of worship, governmental buildings, and businesses throughout the country to ensure established project design and deadlines are met.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Ability to supervise and direct the work of technicians (both S&L employees and outside contractors) to ensure proper adherence to the project scope of work.
  • Proficient in the ability to read and decipher blueprints and schematics including the ability to interpret signal flow and wiring diagrams.
  • Set-up, test, calibrate, tune, and commission complete AV systems based on a project scope of work to the S&L standards.
  • Ability to completely wire a full-size rack to S&L standards.
  • Ability to use basic hand and power tools.
  • Train customers on systems, as needed.
  • Considerable skill in soldering techniques.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to quickly process information, prioritize job tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with various techniques used in pulling wire and cable.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively within a team.
  • Responsible for reporting on-site risks and issues to the Project Manager to ensure efficient resolution and comply with the project timeline and budget.
  • Responsible for keeping track of personal timecard which includes clocking in and out of the correct job assignment.
  • Must always have a clean driving record and ability to pass drug and background checks for project security clearance, as requested by customers and clients.
  • Must be able to travel to job sites throughout the country.
  • The ability to work from elevated heights and to lift heavy equipment.
  • Other duties of a similar nature and level may also be assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Three years of experience in audio, video, and lighting installation.
  • CTS certification preferred but not required. Lead tech will be expected to pursue certification during the first year of employment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively as a team leader and direct the work of others.
  • The ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to the installation of A/V/L.
  • Considerable knowledge of low voltage electronics.

Physical demands and work environment:


The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, use hands and fingers, reach and push with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and balance. Work requires the ability to perform job duties on scaffolding, ladders, and at various heights as well as extensive overhead motion required to install equipment. Work requires the ability to lift fifty pounds on a daily basis and be exposed to warm and cold environments. Clean driving record, background check, and drug testing required.
