Summary Description:

Must be able to work 12 hour rotating shifts every three months which includes days and graveyard shifts. Work under the direct supervision of the Dispatch Supervisor. Dispatcher is responsible for answering incoming phone calls and radio messages promptly, and dispatching patrol unites and members of the Department to specific locations where and when appropriate. Such dispatching will be accomplished without delay.

Duties:

  • Screen all calls carefully to ascertain the nature of each call.
  • Dispatch two or more cars when available to any calls in which the safety to an officer may be in danger.
  • Obtain as many facts as possible regarding the situation before dispatching a unit. The more information obtained, the greater the possibility that the correct number of units will be sent.
  • Send two units, if possible, to all calls which involve danger or potential danger such as: Family disturbances and fights crimes in progress, mental cases, known or suspected dangerous persons, riots or gang fights, drunkenness, serious traffic accidents, or any case in which the exact nature of the cal or request for service is unknown or of doubtful nature to the dispatcher. Many calls may require more than two cars. When the dispatcher or shift supervisor decides that more calls are necessary, he will dispatch them.
  • If outside assistance is necessary, dispatcher or shift supervisor will contact available agencies.
  • Promptly and courteously answer all requests for service and other business from citizens who communicate with the office via telephone or who come into the Police Department for Service.
  • Ensure that all unnecessary traffic and unauthorized members or persons are not allowed in the radio room at any time.
  • Radio room doors will be closed and locked at all time and all business transactions by both members and citizens will be conducted at the appropriate location.
  • Complete and submit departmental records and any other records deemed necessary:
  • Stay current with Law Enforcement accreditation and New Mexico DPS and CIGAS.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of administrative and technical information, comply with policy and procedures.

Education/Experience: High School or GED. In-service training for Dispatcher. Possess a current New Mexico Driver’s License.

Physical Demands: Sitting for extended periods of time. Lifting 50 lbs.

Working Conditions: Work is conducted in an office setting. The incumbent is required to operate a motor vehicle.
