Job Summary:
Under general supervision, works with the foreman executing small-scale landscaping operations and maintaining grounds of an assigned area. The assigned area shall include commercial landscapes. Responsibilities include coordinating with gardeners, growers, and other technicians in preparing sites for grading of planting soils, planting various flora, applying fertilizers, seeding and sodding, transplanting shrubs, plants, etc.

Description:
  • Supervises and works with staff to assign daily tasks, interpret assignments, answer questions, and inspect work performed.
  • Provides on-site training of new employees and ensures crew members and all safety procedures are wearing all safety equipment are being followed.
  • Ensures all equipment needed is loaded onto the assigned work vehicle for the crew to perform the assigned daily task.
  • Performs numerous essential functions, such as pulling weeds, picking up trash and plant material debris, and raking pine straw.
  • Pick up trash, and remove limbs, Spanish moss, or other debris following storm or wind events.
  • Cleans landscape drainage catch basins, basin covers, and drainage swales.
  • Responsible for straightening all post ropes and maintaining them in a level/upright position to ensure a positive guest experience.
  • Hauls plant materials and equipment to and from work sites and assists in unloading trucks and delivering materials.
  • Prepares and grades specified sites for installing flowers, shrubs, trees, sod/grass, etc.; applies fertilizers, seeds, and peat moss as required.
  • Operates light handheld machinery, including weed eaters, backpack blowers, and stick edgers, to maintain turfgrass, plant beds, and hardscapes.
  • Performs general landscape maintenance, filling ruts with top-dressing sand in turf areas and performing light-duty repairs.
  • Install new shrubs, trees, and sod as directed and to departmental standards.
  • Prunes trees, shrubs, and ornamentals using hand tools and power tools. This includes using hand shears, pruning, loppers, power pole saws, and gas head shears.
  • Removes weeds and undesirable plant material and debris through hand and mechanical methods.
  • Places straw and mulch around the base of specified trees, plants, and shrubs to prevent the evaporation of water from the soil and the freezing of roots.
  • Removes dead plants and debris; rakes areas clean for replanting; removes trash from the assigned area.
  • Maintains roads and walkways in landscaped areas by keeping mulch and other materials in the proper location.
  • Operates Toro Groundsmaster to mow non-manicured fields in the Historic District, road shoulders, and other areas as directed.
  • Inspects flora within the assigned area for pest infestation and disease.
  • Clears undergrowth and prepares construction sites for installing plant material, roads, walkways, etc.
  • Distributes water to unirrigated planting areas; sets controls on irrigation boxes.
  • Operates Toro workman with buffalo blower to remove debris from turf areas and hardscapes.
  • Operates commercial ride-on mowers and walks behind Honda mowers to maintain ornamental turf areas.
  • Sprays around trees, plants, and shrubs with herbicides as directed; applies liquids and dry nutrients to lawn and trees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • This position is a red card employee position. In a significant storm event or mandatory evacuation, the employee must report back to work within 24 hours of being notified to return to work to assist the Island with storm cleanup and getting the Island ready for daily operation.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of two-year landscaping experience and six months of crew leader or lead employee experience;
  • May consider an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Criminal and MVR background checks are required.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are required.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
  • Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • More than 50% of the typical workday will be spent balancing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and fingers.
  • Between 25% and 50% of the typical workday will be spent climbing, sitting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Less than 25% of the typical workday is spent crawling.
  • Sensory abilities required are touching and feeling; more than 50% of the time is spent communicating, talking, and hearing.
  • Visual Abilities are required to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Required to perform in outdoor environmental conditions. Exposure to extreme heat, high humidity, occasionally adverse weather conditions, and occasional extreme cold.
  • Will be exposed to hazards such as moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, exposure to chemicals, and subject to vibration.
  • It may be subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, oils, odors, mists, or poor ventilation.
  • Noise levels are considered normal to loud.
