LYTLE BOULEVARD LANDFILL RELIEF ATTENDANT

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT/SOLID WASTE

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

May work permanent part time, 19 hours a week, and may become a permanent part time position.

This position is part-time and on-call and performs landfill attendant responsibilities at the Lytle Boulevard Landfill when the primary landfill attendant is not available. General duties include operation of landfill scale and assessing fees as determined by scale weights, collecting money and making accurate change, directing customers to correct disposal areas, and checking loads for materials with special fees such as tires, appliances, batteries, brush, etc.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Environmental Health Director. The employee takes initiative in completing duties and refers to the Environmental Health Director when issues arise out of the ordinary. The employee works independently with little supervision and has the ability to recognize certain hazardous materials.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Supervision of other employees is not normally a responsibility of positions of this classification.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

(The following descriptions of duties may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management.)

· Opening and closing of the landfill.

· Operation of landfill scale to determine net weight of customer’s load.

· Completing appropriate landfill tickets for each customer to include vehicle license plate number, weight of load and fee assessed, materials with special fees such as appliances, tires, etc, and out-of-state surcharge fee.

· Collecting cash or checks from customers; providing cash paying customers with accurate change; and providing customers with receipts.

· Directing customers to appropriate locations for disposal of items.

· Balance tickets and cash drawer at closing of landfill each day.

· Physical attendance at the Lytle Boulevard Landfill is required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· High school graduate or equivalent.

· Knowledge of basic mathematics.

· Ability to count cash and accurately make change.

· Ability to efficiently operate a calculator.

· Ability to meet and deal effectively with the public.

· Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

· Ability to work independently and with little supervision.

· Ability to recognize certain hazardous materials.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position may require the occasional use of a vehicle to conduct County business. Possession of a valid driver’s license and car insurance required. A safe and acceptable driving record per County policy must be maintained throughout the course of employment.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

· Past government experience.

· Experience working directly with the public.

· Experience working in a cashier position or general clerical position.

· Bilingual in English and Spanish.

BACKGROUND CHECKS:

In order to be considered for this position, final applicants will be going through background checks which may include: criminal, DMV, pre-employment drug testing, psychological testing, reference, certification and education checks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THIS POSITION:

Knowledge of: basic mathematic principals, and basic knowledge of accurately collecting currency and making change to include coins and bills.

Skill in: accurately collecting fees and balancing cash/check transactions.

Ability to: work alone and make decisions independently in accordance with established policy and procedure; use initiative and good judgment in the performance of tasks and responsibilities; courteously meet and deal effectively with the public.

GUIDELINES:

Work is performed within departmental policy and procedure, Federal, State and County rules, regulations and ordinances, and personnel policies. Employee uses good judgment, initiative and experience to interpret and choose between alternative guidelines, however the Environmental Health Director is available for interpretation in unusual situations.

PERSONAL CONTACT AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:

Employee will have contact with the public, co-workers, and other sanitation agencies to provide service, interpret policy and give or exchange information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed at the Lytle Boulevard Landfill and may require moderate physical effort including lifting up to 25 pounds, bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, reaching, standing and walking.

Pay: $12.62 per hour
